Libutti Scores For Raiders Against Cardinals

Senior Rebecca Libutti scored early in the second half, but Ball State held on for a 2-1 victory over Colgate on Saturday


HAMILTON – Senior Rebecca Libutti notched her first goal of the season early in the second half, but Ball State held on for a 2-1 victory over host Colgate in collegiate field hockey action Saturday at Tyler's Field.
 
Sophomore Ally French and junior Cameron Daniels scored for Ball State while junior keeper Shelby Henley recorded eight saves to help the Cardinals remain undefeated on the young season.
 
Libutti scored during a penalty corner attempt at the 44:30 mark of the contest to pull Colgate within one, 2-1, but the Cardinals kept the Raiders from netting the equalizer to earn the one-goal victory.

How It Happened
  • Ball State took a 1-0 lead late in the first half as sophomore Ally French tipped a pass from Tori Widrick into the right side of the net for her first goal of the season.
  • Junior Cameron Daniels doubled the Cardinals margin to 2-0 at the 40:21 mark as she deflected home a penalty corner from just outside the right post.
  • Libutti got the Raiders on the board less than five minutes later, firing a shot from 10 yards out into the upper right-hand corner of the net to make it a 2-1 contest. Senior Eliana Brown and junior Jessica Gardiner were credited with assists on the play.
  • Colgate had a couple of opportunities to tie the game in the final minutes, including a penalty corner as time expired, but the Cardinals were able to keep the Raiders from finding the equalizer and escape with the one-goal victory.

Student Versus Teacher
  • Sautrday's contest served as the third meeting between Colgate and former Raiders assistant and Ball State Head Coach Beth Maddox. The squads first met in Hamilton during Maddox's first season at the helm of the Cardinal program in 2011 and squared off against each other last September in Muncie, Ind.
