Successful Weekend at NY Championships

Women’s Novice 4+ Takes First Place; Men’s Varsity 4+ Wins, Novice 4+ Adds Close Second

WHITNEY POINT, N.Y. –
Colgate Rowing swept to a pair of first-place medals and one second place at the New York State Collegiate Rowing Championships over the weekend.
 
The Women's Novice 4+ and Men's Varsity 4+ crews both brought home first awards, while the Men's Novice 4+ missed by two seconds of making it a three-boat Raiders sweep on Whitney Point Lake.
 
Colgate's Women's Novice 4+ featured Georgia Butcher, Emma Schoenberger, Blaise Desnoes, Jordan Ressa and coxswain Amanda Liberman. The Raiders began competition Saturday with a heat victory in 9:04.79, finishing more than 28 seconds ahead of second-place Rochester. In Sunday's grand final, Colgate rowed to a 9:07.21 time to again outdistance Rochester's 9:30.65.
 
Army, Marist, Union and Ithaca rounded out the field.
 
In the Men's Varsity 4+, Colgate's crew of Ryan Kelliher, Graham Horman, Clarke Cady-McRae, Robert Antonelli and coxswain Nathalie Smith captured its opening heat Saturday in 7 minutes and 35.81 seconds. In Sunday's grand final, the Raiders improved to a time of 7:19.87 to defeat second-place Binghamton by more than five seconds.
 
Two Clarkson boats, New York Maritime and Ithaca rounded out the field.
 
On board for Colgate in the Men's Novice 4+ were Justin Manzi, Andrew Isaacson, Francis Migliore, Shane Buchanan and coxswain Smith. They won their Saturday heat in a time of 7:51.21 to defeat New York Maritime by 7.26 seconds. But the Privateers rebounded in Sunday's grand final to clip Colgate in a very tight finish, 7:39.37 to 7:41.39.
 
St. Lawrence, New York University, Clarkson, Skidmore and Stony Brook were the remaining finishers.
 
Next up for both teams is this weekend's Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia.
