Women’s Rowing Collects Two First Place Finishes

The varsity eight are back-to-back champions at the NY State Championship

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Colgate women's rowing made history at the New York State Collegiate Championships on April 18th. The second varsity four took home gold for the first time at this regatta,  and the varsity eight found themselves victorious after defending their title and becoming back-to-back champions in the event.

HEATS
The Raiders started out the day with a first-place finish in the first heats of the varsity eight event, and looked to defend their title. The crew crossed the line in 7:18.160, clearing the rest of the heat by nine seconds. Colgate clinched a spot in the grand final, where they faced Hamilton College for a second time that day, along with Marist College, University of Albany, Smith College, and William Smith College.

The second varsity eight also earned a spot in their grand final after finishing within the top two boats in their heat. Hamilton College clocked in first (7:26.680) and the Raiders crossed shortly after at 7:29.023. Similarly to the varsity eight, their final consisted of entries from Albany, Smith, Hamilton, Marist, and Wiliam Smith.

Another grand final clinch came next from the varsity four, where they earned their spot with a time of 8:42.809. The team fell to Union (8:27.450) in their heat, leading them to face the Garnet Chargers again in the afternoon. The four also found themselves pitted against Long Island, Marist, Syracuse, and Canisius in the final.

The second varsity four event only had five entries, two of which were Colgate's, so the boats went straight to finals racing.

FINALS
The Raiders found success in the second varsity four event as the pair of boats sealed first and third place finishes. The second varsity four, coxed by Olivia Larsen, earned first with their winning time of 8:31.43, six seconds ahead of the other four competitors. Coxswain, Caitlin Walker, led the third varsity four to third over Union and St. John Fisher (9:02.500) for a bronze medal.

This will mark the first time the Raiders are champions in the second varsity four event.

The varsity eight, led by Katherine Metcalf, crossed the line first to make history in the event for Colgate as successful defending champions. The crew finished seven seconds ahead of the competition, earning a time of 7:07.800.

Metcalf, Marie Clausen, Elena Myatt, Rebecca Carew, Ellie Givertz-Steel, Sophia Cerroni, and Stella Curcio became back-to-back champions in the varsity eight event after competing in the same boat in 2025.

The second varsity eight clinched another medal for the Raiders as they placed third overall with a time of 7:49.647. The boat beat out teams from Albany, Hamilton, and Smith in order to secure this position.

The day was rounded out by the varsity four, who clocked in at 9:16.255 to earn fourth in the grand final.
