Raiders Hang Strong With No. 14 Ohio State

Colgate Drops 70-50 Decision But Not Without Fight, Three Raider Players in Double-Figures

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Colgate kept its game against No. 14 Ohio State within reach for much of the contest but a late 15-4 run ultimately secured the win for its nationally ranked foe.

With less than eight minutes to play it was a nine-point game following senior Ethan Jacobs' final trey of the night.

Unfortunately, the Buckeyes answered with a big run to close out the game and the Raiders were never able to recover.

Leading head coach Matt Langel's squad was Jacobs, who tallied 18 points in the contest. This was the second game in the row the 6-11 center led Colgate in scoring. The psychology major chipped in a game and team-high five rebounds adding to his already strong performance.

Damon Sherman-Newsome earned 12 points in the game after missing most of Colgate's last contest with an ankle injury. That injury also affected his double-digit scoring streak, which was halted at nine-straight games dating back to March 1 of last season.

Straight From The Source
• Colgate head coach Matt Langel: (on his overall thoughts from the game) "The bright lights and big stars shocked us for a couple seconds and for a couple minutes we weren't quite ready to go. But then we kind of got our legs underneath us. Damon (Sherman-Newsome) hadn't practiced since injuring his ankle in the Sacred Heart game so it was good to have him back out there for us. Overall we just need to find a way to make a little less of the poor decisions that we made throughout the game."

(on attacking Ohio State's zone) "We play against Syracuse every year so obviously their zone is somewhat similar. It was something that other than our freshmen all our guys have seen before. To be honest, the Syracuse zone is even a little bit longer, if that's possible than Ohio State's zone."

"You have to do a lot of different things. There isn't anything new. We've got some savvy guys with experience and we've got to use pass fakes and shot fakes to penetrate the zone via the pass. And then when you do get an open shot you've got to be able to make it or the possession was kind of null and void."

"I learned a lot of the game from Fran Dunphy and he always told me as both a player and a coach "the best players you can really tell they're good because they know how to play against the zone". Because there are no set plays and you can't run an offense you have to read the defense and that's what we tried to teach our guys. So the fact that we got some open looks is a testament to them and that they're learning how to play the game."
