Second-Half Surge Leads Raiders Past Saints

Colgate Scored Four Goals in the Second Half to Defeat Visiting Siena, 5-2, Sunday at Tyler's Field

HAMILTON –Colgate scored four times in the second half to record a 5-2 victory over visiting Siena in collegiate field hockey action Sunday at Tyler's Field.
 
Junior Jessica Gardiner tallied her fourth goal of the season just 77 seconds into the contest to give Colgate an early 1-0 lead. Siena would draw level with a goal just 40 seconds into the second half, but the Raiders quickly responded with goals from seniors Guiliana Kafaf and Rebecca Libutti to take a 3-1 lead.
 
The Saints cut the Colgate advantage in half with a goal in the 65th minute to make it a 3-2 contest, but a pair of tallies from the stick of senior Elina Brown just 46 seconds apart in the 68th minute put the game out of reach.

How It Happened
- Colgate opened the scoring just 77 seconds into the contest. Junior Jessica Gardiner deflected home a pass from senior Rebecca Libutti at the left post during a penalty corner try to give the Raiders an early 1-0 advantage.
- Siena knotted the score at 1-all less than a minute into the second half when Megan Bohse redirected a pass from Brittany Ontesto at the 35:40 mark to pull the Saints even.
- Colgate regained its lead less than three minutes after Siena tied the game. Kafaf fired shot from the top of the circle during a penalty corner opportunity that was slowed by the stick of a Siena defender, but still found its way into the back of the net for Kafaf's first goal of the season. Libutti and Gardiner were both credited with assists on the play.
- Libutti expanded the Raiders cushion to 3-1 in the 43rd minute, receiving a pass form Kafaf in the middle of the circle before placing a shot into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the campaign.
- Siena made it a one-goal contest at the 64:29 mark when Bohse redirected a ball played by Kate Gillespie into the cage to make it a 3-2 game.
- Brown would put the game out of reach moments later with a pair of goals just 46 seconds apart in the 68th minute. Her first tally came with 67:10 elapsed in the contest with an individual effort that saw her work her way along the right end line into the middle of the circle before firing a shot past the Siena keeper into the right side of the goal.
- Brown struck again at the 67:56 mark, knocking home a rebound on a shot from Katelyn Francese into the goal for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
 
Seniors Go Out With A Bang
- On senior weekend, it's only fitting that the class of 2015 played a major role in its final home game at Tyler's Field.
- Together, seniors Eliana Brown, Katelyn Francese, Guiliana Kafaf and Rebecca Libutti combined to score four goals and add in four assists.
 
Key Raider Info
- With her two goals in the contest, Brown took over the team scoring lead with 17 points (7G/3A).
- Gardiner and Libutti became the third and fourth Raiders to reach double figures in points this season as they now have 10 and 12 points, respectively, in 2014.
- Francese recorded her first point of the season with her assist on Brown's second goal of the contest.
