Jones Scores For Colgate Against American

Sophomore Whitney Jones scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season in Colgate's 4-1 setback at American on Saturday

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore Whitney Jones scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season, but American tallied three first-half goals to defeat Colgate, 4-1, in Patriot League Field Hockey action Saturday at William I Jacobs Recreational Complex.
 
American took an early 2-0 lead before Jones stuck in the 26th minute to cut the Raiders' deficit to 2-1. The Eagles would regain their two-goal advantage less than three minutes after Jones' tally and added an insurance marker early the second half to determine the three-goal margin.

Colgate received good news later in the day as with Bucknell's 2-1 win over Lafayette, the Raiders clinched a spot in the 2014 Patriot League Championship. Colgate will make its 10th overall appearance and fifth trip in the last eight seasons. The regular season champion will host the four-team tournament, slated for Nov. 7-8.

How It Happened
- Natalie Konerth staked American to a 1-0 lead 11:30 into the contest, knocking home a rebound off her own shot attempt for her first goal of the season.
- Jess Davis doubled the Eagles advantage in the 17th minute. During a penalty corner try, Davis took a pass from Grace Wilson on the left side and fired a shot into the net to put American in front, 2-0.
- Jones cut the Raiders deficit in half with a goal in the 25th minute. During a penalty corner opportunity, Jones collected the ball and maneuvered herself to the right side of the cage before depositing the ball into the back of the net to make it a 2-1 contest.
- Davis helped the Eagles regained their two-goal cushion less than three minutes after Jones' tally, scoring at the 27:04 mark to give American a 3-1 edge. Davis took a pass from Carly Atchison and fired a shot into the left-hand side of the net for her second goal of the contest.
- Isabel Terwindt closed out the scoring in the 46th minute, receiving a pass from Atchison during a penalty corner try and putting the ball into the left side of the cage to make it 4-1.

- American posted an 18-9 shot advantage in the contest while Colgate held a 7-5 edge in shots taken in the second half.
- The Eagles held a 10-7 edge in penalty corner tries in the game. The Raiders turned in a 5-2 advantage in that category in the second half.
- American's Grace Wilson led all players with five shot attempts in the contest while senior Eliana Brown attempted a team-best three shots for Colgate.
- Senior Amanda DiDomizio recorded six saves in goal for Colgate while Kate McBeath notched five saves for American.
 
Jones Takes Over Scoring Lead With Goal
- Sophomore Whitney Jones goal on Saturday moves the Sudbury, Mass., product into first place on the team's scoring chart with 14 points (6G/2A).
- The goal broke a tie between Jones and senior Eliana Brown (5G/2A).
