MUNCIE, Ind. – The Colgate field hockey team had a 1-0 lead going into the second half, but two goals by Ball State in the final 35 minutes was the difference in a 2-1 loss for the Raiders on Sunday.
Colgate (0-4) got its lone goal from Kelsey Jensen early in the first half after long possession in the circle for the Raiders. Amanda DiDomizio made seven stops in the defeat for Colgate.
The Cardinals (2-2) saw Tarel Teach tally both goals in the second half with Mikayla Mooney added an assist on the gamewinner. Shelby Henley made five stops with four coming in the first half when Colgate put on most of its pressure.
The Raiders took the 1-0 lead just 7:18 into the game as Colgate kept up its pressure after earning a penalty corner. Henley was able to turn away the first attempt on the corner, but the Raiders stuck with it and Jensen was able to knock one past Henley from the middle of the circle. Rebecca Libutti had her shot saved and then Jensen had her first chance blocked, but eventually scored.
Colgate kept the 1-0 lead into the locker room, but the Cardinals evened the score 13 minutes into the final half. Teach gained space in the circle and dribbled around DiDomizio. She hit the open net from the left side to tie the score at 1-1.
Halle Bigger had a chance to regain the advantage for the Raiders with 15:40 left in the game. She fired a shot that rang off the post, so the game stayed tied 1-1.
The Cardinals took the lead for good with Teach tallying her second of the contest off a rebound in front. Mooney fired a shot on net that DiDomizio was able to fight off, but Teach put home the rebound to give the home team the 2-1 win.
Ball State had a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners and had 19 shots to Colgate's 13. The Cardinals had 10 shots in the second half, while the Raiders posted five.
Colgate is back at Tyler's Field next weekend for two games. Lock Haven is scheduled to be on campus next Saturday, while St. Francis (Pa) will be facing the Raiders on Sunday.Â
