WASHINGTON – Sophomore
Austin Tillotson and senior
Murphy Burnatowski sparked a great second half for the Colgate men's basketball team as they nearly pulled the upset over Big East Conference foe Georgetown, 61-55 here Saturday afternoon.
"Obviously the game was tough," Colgate head coach
Matt Langel said. "It was a great basketball game, where the kids got to figure out the speed of play and the flow of the game on every possession. I am proud of our guys for doing that. We obviously got off to a cold shooting start. We don't have the luxury of being able to pound the ball inside and pound the glass, and I credit Georgetown for doing that in the second half.
"They really made it hard for us to protect the basket, but with the way our team is built and the players we have, we've got to be able to make jump shots. In our four-game win stretch we were able to do that, but not so much tonight, especially early in the game."
Tillotson, the York, Pa., native, posted his second career 20-point game in as many contests. After going a perfect 9-of-9 from the floor, 4-of-4 from behind the arc, and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe in the Raiders last game, Tillotson was yet again perfect on Saturday from long range and the free-throw line. He hit all three of his treys and went 8-of-8 from the line, missing only two from the floor to finish the day 5-of-7 for his game-high 21 points.
Colgate (4-3) also saw Burnatowski notch his first double-double of the season as he collected 12 points and 10 rebounds. He led all rebounders and was 5-of-7 from the charity stripe.
The Raiders shot a mere 32 percent on the day but went 11-of-24 from the floor in the second half. Colgate also registered five 3-pointers compared to the Hoyas' one.
Georgetown (6-2) saw three guys in double-digits as Joshua Smith's 14 points led the way. Markel Starks (12 points) and Nate Lubick (10 points) also found themselves with double-figures as they lifted Georgetown to its fifth-straight victory.
In a low-scoring first half, neither team shot the ball well as both were under 30 percent from the floor. Colgate made five of its 26 attempts for 19-percent shooting, while the Hoyas notched nine of their 31 attempts for 29-percent shooting.
Georgetown started the game on a 10-0 run, but a trey from Tillotson ended the Raider drought and got Colgate on the board at 10-3. The sophomore transfer continued his hot shooting by draining two more from long range to pull Colgate within four at 13-9 with less than seven to play in the opening 20 minutes.
A made free throw from Aaron Bowen in the closing minutes of the first half, sent the Hoyas into the break with a six-point advantage at 21-15.
A good layup out of the gate from
Luke Roh (pictured right) cut the lead back to four, but Georgetown quickly increased its margin to double-figures, following a trey from D'Vaunt Smith-Rivera that made the score 31-19 with 17:39 left to play.
The Hoyas created their largest lead at 14 points twice over the course of the next five and a half minutes, but Colgate would not go away. The Raiders started to slowly chip away at the deficit, pulling to within four at least three times in the last minute of action.
Despite baskets from Roh and Jacobs during that time, Georgetown would go 6-of-8 from the charity stripe to secure the victory.
The Raiders play host to Fordham on Tuesday in their next matchup. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip on Cotterell Court and can be seen live on the Patriot League Network.
