VESTAL, N.Y. – Sophomore
Austin Tillotson posted a career-high 25 points en route to a Colgate men's basketball 29-point victory over nearby rival Binghamton on Saturday night.
"We got good shots today, which is most important," Colgate head coach
Matt Langel said. "We don't have guys shooting desperation shots. We are spreading the ball around. The guys are shooting it with confidence and they are enjoying playing on that end of the floor together."
Colgate earned its fourth straight victory in the 93-64 win, for its first four-game winning streak since Jan. 2-9, 2010. The Raiders also move to 4-2 on the season, their best start since 2007-08 when Colgate also started out 4-2 in its opening six games.
The Raiders reached the 90-point mark for the second time this season. Colgate hadn't recorded back-to-back 90-point games since 1995-96 when they earned a 91-76 victory over Lafayette followed by a 101-84 win over Siena.
Tillotson led the way with his top shooting performance. He went a perfect 9-for-9 from the floor, 4-for-4 from behind the arc, and 3-for-3 from the charity stripe for his 25 points. The sophomore's 4-of-4 from long range made him Colgate's fourth ever player to shoot a flawless 1.000 percent from downtown in a game (minimum is four made 3-pointers). He joins Kyle Roemer (5-of-5 in 2005), Mike Venezia (4-of-4 in 2008) and Colgate's current Director of Operations
Mark Linebaugh (4-of-4 in 2002). Tillotson also added three rebounds and three assists to one turnover in 26 minutes of action.
"It was almost perfect," Langel added of his point guard's impressive performance. "He had one turnover that slightly flawed his day. Austin's been a big boost to our team. Obviously he was the guy to make a bunch of shots today but he also facilitates our offense. He gives us a little bit of an edge and presence on the court. His commitment to improving last year when he wasn't on the court was superb. He's kind of been that force to get other guys committed to really being the best players they can be individually and that in turn will help us as a team. I was proud that he was able to do so well today. We are certainly going to need great things out of him in the future."
Colgate continued its sharing of the basketball with three other Raider players notching double figure scoring nights.
Ethan Jacobs registered 15 points and has earned double-digits in all of the Raiders' games so far this season.
Damon Sherman-Newsome added 14 points off the bench while
Murphy Burnatowski tallied 11 points and four boards.
The Raiders finished the night shooting a solid 66.7 percent from the floor, making 34 of their 51 attempts. Colgate also slightly outrebounded the Bearcats 28-24 and posted 18 assists to Binghamton's 12.
Colgate led the entire game after Binghamton (1-6) scored the opening basket. The Bearcats received a team-high 14 points from Marlon Beck, who went 5-of-8 from the floor. Roland Brown also added 10 points to Binghamton's total while Magnus Richards led the team on the boards with five.
After the Bearcats scored the game's first basket the Raiders answered with the next eight points to take the early 8-2 lead. Tillotson had five of those points during that stretch.
A few minutes later, Binghamton would hit a trey to cut the lead down to two but a make from behind the arc from Jacobs would extend the Raiders' advantage up to 13-8 with 15:28 remaining in the opening 20 minutes.
Colgate pushed its lead up to as much as 20 in the first half following a good free throw from
Luke Roh to take a 39-19 advantage with less than seven minutes to play before halftime.
The Bearcats rallied and cut the deficit down to 10 but a jumper from senior
Clayton Graham sent the Raiders into halftime up 48-36.
Three quick baskets for the Raiders after the break created a 21-point advantage for Colgate with less than 17 minutes to play.
Colgate then found itself on a 12-3 run midway through the second half to push its lead to 27 at 82-55.
Back to back treys from
Matt McMullen and Jacobs with less than five minutes to play ultimately secured Colgate's victory.
The Raiders scored 22 of their 93 points from in the paint and 15 off turnovers. The bench also contributed 35 points on the night.
Colgate is back on the court Saturday when the Raiders travel to Georgetown to face off with the Hoyas at noon in the Verizon Center.
