HAMILTON – Colgate women's soccer wrapped up its last non-conference game on Tuesday night when the Raiders hosted Princeton. The Tigers earned the 3-1 win.
Colgate (9-6-1) saw Jenna Panepinto notch her second goal of the year off an aggressive play in the 76th minute. Erin Cummings got the start in net for the Raiders posting a career-high eight saves throughout the contest.
Princeton (6-5-4) registered three goals in the match thanks to markers from Melissa Downey, Gabriella Guzman, and Tyler Lussi. Hannah Winner also posted one save in the victory.
After a slow opening 10 minutes, Princeton earned the first good opportunity on net. Jessica Lee sent a through ball to Lauren Lazo on the right sideline. The junior then played it back to Lee inside the box, where she took one touch before sending the ball across the face of the goal. The Raiders were able to clear it out before any damage could be done.
With 22 minutes remaining in the first half, Lazo sparked another Tiger attack when she stripped Colgate of the ball on the wing. She crossed it into the box finding the head of Jesse McDonough, who's redirection hit off the crossbar and back into play where Colgate kick it away from danger.
Sarah Coy answered when she jump-started a Raider transition by beating a Princeton defender with a great move from 30 yards out. The rookie then sent Sidney Parodie a solid ball in behind the Tiger defense. Parodie tried to cross it into the box but it took a deflection along the way and sailed out for a corner kick.
On the next possession Taryn Tomczyk played a dangerous corner deep into the box but Princeton cleared it away before the Raiders could finish it off.
Colgate's sophomore goalie came up huge when she stuffed Lazo on a breakaway opportunity with less than 10 minutes to play in the half. Cummings came sliding out to make a kick save on Lazo's driven shot.
Early in the second 45 minutes, Cummings made another stellar save on a long range shot from Jessica Haley to push it away from goal.
The Tigers took the 1-0 advantage after Downey finished one past Cummings at the 49:27 mark. Lazo started the play but firing a shot towards goal. Cummings came up with the initial save pushing the ball off the crossbar but wasn't able to fall on the rebound as Downey put it in the back of the net.
Ten minutes later, the Raiders were called for a handball inside the box, awarding the Tigers a penalty kick. Guzman stepped up and converted on the opportunity, increasing Princeton's advantage to 2-0.
Coy tried to cut into the difference with 28 minutes left when she sent a long shot towards goal. Her attempt tested Winner because the Tiger goalie had to make a jumping save to push it over the crossbar.
At the 75:55 minute mark, Panepinto pulled the Raiders to within one, at 2-1, after she scored on an aggressive play. After losing the ball to a Tiger defender, Panepinto continued pressuring the ball as Princeton sent it back to its goalie. When Winner went to clear the ball, it took a deflection off Panepinto and into the back of the net.
Colgate turned up its attack but a late goal by the Tigers ultimately secured a 3-1 Princeton win.
The Raiders are back on Van Doren Field on Saturday for their last regular season conference matchup with American at 7 p.m. The game will also acknowledge the seniors prior to kick off.Â
"There's a lot on the line for this game," Colgate head coach Kathy Brawn said about the Raiders upcoming battle with American. "Obviously we are looking to make sure we have a home game for Tuesday's quarterfinal and the seeding will be set based on the result of Saturday's game. There's a lot on the line for both programs, so we know the teams are going to come out and play a great game."
