EASTON, Pa. – The Colgate women's volleyball team has responded with a vengeance in the last four matches after falling to American last Friday and it continued today with another 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-14) sweep over Lafayette.
The Raiders (15-6, 7-1 PL) is tied with American and Army atop the Patriot League standings at 7-1 with Army playing at Holy Cross this afternoon. Colgate didn't have to put up big numbers today as
Diane Seely led the way with nine kills, while
Kaylee Fifer added 2 assists.
Caitlin Cremin and
Lexi Finger led the team in digs with 14 each. The Raiders hit well as they were over 20 percent in each of the three sets.
"Our defense and serving were very good today," head coach
Ryan Baker said. "The team effort and chemistry are fun to watch and be a part of."
The Leopards (9-11, 1-8 PL) didn't have the same success in the attack game. They had a negative hitting percentage. Jet Manzi had the best afternoon at the net with six kills, while Samantha Volk posted 16 assists and added four aces.
The first set was all Colgate right from the beginning. The Raiders scored the first five points with two kills from Seely and one from
Kate Reilly, while Cremin added an ace. The Leopards never could get anything going as the Raiders pulled away late in the set and earned its largest lead at 23-12. Seely and Reilly added two more kills and Cremin put down another ace to increase the lead.
Katie Fauntleroy gave Colgate the 1-0 lead with a strike to win the set 25-15.
The Raiders kept the pedal down in the second set and accelerated out to an 11-2 lead. Reilly continued to rack up the kills with three during the first 13 points and
Allie Dyer added a pair of aces. Lafayette tired to claw back in the set and got within four at 15-11 after errors by Colgate, but that was as close as the Leopards got. The Raiders caught fire and ended the set on a 10-1 run to earn the 25-12 win. Cremin had three more aces and Seely added two strikes, while the defense held the Leopards to just five kills as a team in the second set.
It didn't take long for the Raiders to take control of the third set with an early 12-5 advantage. Colgate got help from the Leopards at the beginning with half the point coming from errors. Young had two kills and
Madison McAndrews added an ace. Lafayette had one last gasp with a 6-0 run to cut the Raider lead to 14-12, but Colgate called a timeout to settle down and finished the set on its second 11-2 run of the afternoon to win the match with a 25-14 win in the final set.
The Raiders are back at Cotterell Court on Tuesday night as Bucknell and Colgate are facing each other for the second time in four days.
