HAMILTON, N.Y. – Catherine Williams notched her second multi-goal game of the season to lead the Colgate women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over instate rival Cornell Friday night at Van Doren Field.
The Raiders (5-2-1) increased their unbeaten streak to five games thanks to the pair of goals from Williams, while also getting a score from
Lexi Panepinto.
Ashley Walsh earned her fifth, making two saves.
The Big Red (0-3-0) saw Jayann Gabrio tally its lone goal, which came late in the first half. Tori Christ got the start in goal and made eight stops in the loss.
"This was another fantastic team effort," said head coach
Kathy Brawn. "Against Albany we saw
Ashley Walsh make one of the best saves in Raider soccer history and tonight
Chelsea Roche,
Emily Manoogian and Williams linked up for what was among the most spectacular goals in the 30 years of this program. We'll spend some time tomorrow preparing for a strong Harvard team."
Williams got the Raiders off to a great start with a fabulous goal 15 minutes into play. Chelsea Roach played a free kicked into the box where
Emily Manoogian trapped it down for Williams to smash into the back of the net giving them the 1-0 lead.
Cornell answered in the 28th minute off a set piece taken by Gabrio. The unassisted goal took an unlucky Colgate deflection, evening the score at 1-1. Colgate almost took back the lead in the 40th minute off a laser of a free kick taken by Roach. Christ made a diving save to knock the ball out for a corner kick.
Early into the second half Colgate had another great opportunity to take the lead with a scramble in front of the net, however Cornell managed to survive without conceding a goal.
Williams tallied her second of the night in the 66th minute. She fired a shot into the upper right corner off of a volley to push the Raiders back on top 2-1. The goal came off a perfect cross by
Jillian Kinter and was her sixth goal of the season.
Panepinto secured the Colgate win by riffling a shot at the top of the 18-yard box over the head of Christ to lift the Raiders, 3-1, over the Big Red. Panepinto's goal was set up by the great teamwork of Kiara Jenkins and
Kelsey Hough.
Colgate outshot Cornell, 19-6, and had a 8-7 advantage on corners.
Colgate will host Harvard on Sunday at 1 p.m.
