IRVINE, Calif. – Liz Karnes had nine kills and
Kaylee Fifer added 23 assists in a 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 16-25, 25-11) defeat to UC Irvine on Saturday afternoon.
Colgate (0-6) saw
Lindsay Young and
Brooke Shupryt-Knoop tally seven kills apiece as well. Shupryt-Knoop and Fifer did their part on the defensive end with 10 digs each.
The Anteaters (2-4) were led by Aly Squires, who recorded a match-high 17 kills, while Marissa Alvarez tallied 34 assists. Kristin Winkler picked up 15 digs to lead all on the defensive side of the court.
In the first set, UC Irvine built a 13-7 lead with kills by Marisa Bubica and Squires, while Colgate had strikes from Karnes and Young. The Anteaters got the lead up to 16-10, but the Raiders fought back with a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 17-15.
Kate Reilly and Fifer had kills during the run and
Caitlin Cremin added an ace. The two-point deficit was the closest Colgate got as UC Irvine closed out the set with an 8-3 run to earn the 25-18 win.
The Raiders looked to even the match in the second set and the teams were playing even throughout the first eight points. With the set tied at 4-4, UC Irvine got four quick points to go up 8-4, before
Michelle McCarthy stopped the run with a kill. The lead for the home team increased to 19-11 and the Raiders were able to get some points back, however, the Anteaters went up 2-0 in the match with a 25-17 win in the second set.
In the third set, Colgate turned it on right from the beginning with an early 11-4 lead with kills by Young, Shupryt-Knoop, Fifer and Karnes, while also forcing many errors by the Anteaters. The Raiders never allowed UC Irvine to within five points and cruised to a 25-16 win to take back one set and force a fourth one. Karnes and Young finished with three kills during the set and the team had five total blocks.
The fourth set, however, didn't go the Raiders' way as the Anteaters went up early and never relinquished the lead to earn the 3-1 win with a 25-11 victory in the set. Shupryt-Knoop led the way for Colgate in the set with three kills, while Karnes had two.
Colgate will be back on the court tonight with their final match of the LMU/UCI Invitational with a tough task as the Raiders take on nationally-ranked Nebraska at 6 p.m. from Crawford Gym.
