ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (3/17/12) – The Colgate men's hockey team finished its 2011-12 season with a 3-0 loss to Cornell in Atlantic City at the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game on Saturday night.
Colgate (19-17-3) got a good start in net by
Alex Evin as he made 25 stops. The Raiders were shutout for only the second time this season. They have four chances on the power play, but did not capitalize.
Cornell (18-8-7) may have punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament with the win today. Sean Collins, Dustin Mowrey and John McCarron were the goal scorers for the Big Red. Andy Iles was the starter for Cornell in net and made 25 stops to earn his sixth shutout of the season.
Cornell had a 12-6 shot advantage in the first, but didn't get on the board until its 12th shot of the period, which came with 25 second remaining. The Big Red did a good job getting the puck into the zone and then Locke Jillson found Collins coming down the opposite wing and sipped a pass over to him and he hit the open net.
The Big Red increased its lead to 3-0 with two goals in the second period. Mowrey put his team up 2-0 with a power play goal with 6:26 left. Greg Miller took a shot form the point that Evin stopped, but the rebound popped out to Mowrey and he swatted it home for the two-goal advantage. McCarron made it a three-goal deficit for the Raiders with an unassisted goal coming with 2:12 remaining in the second frame. Colgate gave the puck up in its own zone and McCarron ripped home a wrister.
The third period was a defensive period as Cornell went into the trap and held onto its lead as Colgate had an 8-6 shot advantage, but couldn't beat Iles as the Big Red took the consolation game by a 3-0 score.
Colgate finished its season with a 19-17-3 record, while
Austin Smith came up two goals shy of tying the all-time single season goals record as he posted 36 this season, along with 21 helpers for 57 points. Smith and Wagner combined for 108 points this season. It was also the end of the season for the Raiders nine seniors. Smith, Evin,
Kevin McNamara,
Corbin McPherson,
Mark Nasca,
Matt Firman,
Nick Prockow,
Bryan Bessette and
