HAMILTON –
The Colgate men's hockey team outshot St. Lawrence 33-17, but fell short Friday night in a 4-2 loss at Starr Rink.

Colgate (6-7-2) had the better of the scoring opportunities but couldn't mange to net the go-ahead goal. The Raiders saw Tyson Spink and Mike McCann both notch goals in the game, while rookie Spencer Finney made 13 saves.

St. Lawrence (7-4-2) scored two goals back to back to give them an early two-goal lead midway through the first period. The Saints saw Jeremy Wick, Patrick Doherty, Justin Baker and Greg Carey all scored goals in the win. Matt Weninger got the start in net for the away team and pushed aside 31 shots.

The Saints got their first goal midway through the beginning period. In a 2-on-1 odd man rush, Baker played the puck up to Wick, who was breaking down the ice with Carey. Wick was able to fake the pass to Carey and fire a shot stick side past Finney for the early goal.

Less than two minutes later St. Lawrence extended its lead at 2-0 after Colgate turned the puck over near center ice. Kyle Flanagan was able to find Doherty, who was wide open at the far post. Doherty shot to the top right corner of Finney's glove side for the 2-0 lead.

Colgate would cut the lead in half on a power play goal with 6:04 left to play in the first. Jeremy Price saw an opening and fired a shot on net. The puck was tipped by Kyle Baun and deflected off of Weninger. Spink, who was alone on the backside of the net, put the rebound in to give the Raiders their first goal of the game and it was his third of the year.

Throughout the second period the Raiders dominated the puck possession, but the Saints were able to take advance of a 5-on-3 power play and reclaim the two-goal lead at 3-1.  Baker's goal came at the 14:26 mark in the second period. After a scrum in front of the net, the Saints worked the puck at the top of the circles before taking a shot. Baker was able to put the puck in off a rebound. The assists were given to Flanagan and Gunnar Hughes.

St. Lawrence grabbed its largest lead of the night at 4-1 in the final period after Carey put one just over Finney's glove on the power play. Inside the Colgate zone, Flanagan found Carey in the middle of the ice, where he took a wrist shot past Finney.

The Raiders once again cut the lead in half with 1:01 to play in the game. Daniel Gentzler passed the puck to the center slot where McCann was waiting to put one home, making it 4-2.

Even through Colgate led on shots and faceoffs they were unable to find the equalizer. The Raiders will be back on the ice tomorrow for their last day of Silver Puck Weekend. Colgate faces Clarkson at 4 p.m. in Starr Rink.

Tomorrow also acknowledges Colgate's annual toy drive. Fans are encouraged to bring any unopened toy/gift to the rink to donate to those in need. In return, Colgate will give free admission to fans that donate.
