ELON, N.C. – Junior
Pat Moore led all scorers with 31 points and helped the Colgate defeat Coppin State 88-84 Sunday afternoon in the final regional game of the Maui Invitational.
“Pat was the beneficiary of their style of play,” Raiders head coach
Matt Langel said. “He was open a number of the times, they play zone and his teammates got him a lot of good looks. But you've got to give him credit; he obviously stepped up. Seven of nine from three is a terrific shooting percentage.”
Colgate (2-3) saw Moore score 23 points in the first half to tie his career game-high, which happened last year against Lehigh. He was 6-of-8 from behind the arc in the first half.
Brandon James showed his strength pulling down 14 boards throughout the game. The Raiders also went five for eight from behind the arc in the second half.
“We did a lot of good things,” Langel added. “We haven't played in a game like this yet this year. They play up-tempo and gamble a lot on the defensive end. For us, defense, rebounding and turnovers have both plagued us in the past.
"Today, Coppin State got only 12 offensive rebounds, which was a good job in the most part for us, but we had 27 turnovers. A lot of them were just mindless turnovers, panicking and not being strong, so we've obviously got to work on that a little bit although we don't play a lot of teams that play that style.”
Coppin State (0-4) was led by Troy Franklin, who grabbed 22 points. Michael Murray and Andre Armstrong both tied with 16 points. Murray also grabbed 11 rebounds.
The Eagles came out making two threes and a jumper to take the early lead on the Raiders. The only basket Colgate saw in the first five minutes of the game was from Moore. After that, Moore, the Whitesboro, N.Y., native, personally took over the game, knocking down six three-pointers in the first.
Moore tied the game for the Raiders at the 11-minute mark in the first to make it 17-17. Colgate then took over the lead after
Luke Roh found Moore on a fast break opportunity. He put the layup in with ease.
The Raiders kept up their scoring with a basket from
Brandon James. The play started with
Damon Sherman-Newsome driving to the baseline and finding James, who converted making the score 30-24.
James hit a three at the end of the half sending the Raiders into break with the 41-35 lead.
Mitch Rolls hit a three to start the second half, extending the Raiders lead. The Eagles weren't out of the game yet, as they scored the next three baskets making it only a four-point game.
Throughout the second half, the Raiders were up by as much as 11. But Coppin State would not go away, making three pointers at key moments.
James drove to the basket but made a quick pass to Roh, who was wide open. He put it away making it 73-63 with 4:27 left in the game.
The Eagles fought back, hitting a trio of three-pointers to pull within two in the last minute and a half of play.
The Raiders didn't fold under pressure, and eventually Sherman-Newsome would put the game away with two clutch free throws.
Moore had this to say about his career-high 31 points: “My teammates were just finding me, and I was able to make the open shots.
“It feels good to score a career high. Its always good when you make your first couple shots and I just kind of kept going with it.”
The game would end with Colgate taking home its second win of the season. The Raiders now travel home to Hamilton to prepare for St. Francis (Pa.) on Wednesday in Loretto, Pa. at 5 p.m.
