Colgate grabbed its largest lead of the game at seven after Burnatowski knocked down his third three-pointer of the game. The game then went back and forth with both teams making their shots at each end of the court. Elon's Jack Isenbarger took the ball to the hoop, getting fouled along the way. He made the shot and the free throw to put the Phoenix back on top.
Two free throws from Sherman-Newsome tied the game yet again. However the Raiders missed two three-pointers that rolled around the rim before falling out that would have put them back on top. Elon went on an 8-3 run with less than three minutes to go and took the lead into halftime, 41-35.
At the beginning of the second half, Elon's Ryley Beaumont put up two three pointers to extend a 14-point lead over the Raiders.
Colgate started the second half 2-of-8 shooting, but the Raiders were getting open looks with offensive boards and fast break opportunities.
It wasn't until there were eight minutes left when Colgate started slowly chipping away at the 20-point deficit. A good layup by Sherman-Newsome and a three-pointer from Rolls cut the Elon lead to only 11 with five minutes to play. The Raiders went on a 9-0 run to get within seven as the time ticked away late into the game.
The Raiders shot 5 of 9 from behind the arc in the second half but couldn't manage to close the gap. Elon took the win 81-72.
Colgate will be back on the court Sunday, facing Coppin State at 2 p.m. in the final game of the Maui Invitiational.
