MILWAUKEE – The Colgate men's basketball team wrapped up the opening games of the Maui Invitational at Marquette and Murphy Burnatowski turned in a double-double in the 84-63 loss on Sunday.

The Raiders (0-2) got 24 points and 12 boards, including seven offensive rebounds, from Burnatowski. Pat Moore had a good effort with 16 points and 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Luke Roh also turned in a good performance with seven points, 10 rebounds and five assists and more importantly, no turnovers.

“I am proud of this group,” said head coach Matt Langel. “We are much better in every aspect of the game and that's what I have been asking of these guys. They need to find a way to get better.”

The Golden Eagles. (1-0) took the court for their first game of the season after having their original season opener canceled on Friday in Charleston, S.C., on the deck of the USS Yorktown. Jamil Wilson led the way with 15 points, while Davante Gardner added 14 off the bench.

Marquette came out shooting and went up 10-5 in the first five minutes. Wilson led the way with a pair of 3-pointers, while Mitch Rolls hit his first shot of the game and it was a three. The Raiders started the game 1-of-8 shooting, but were getting open looks with offensive boards and fast break opportunities.

The Golden Eagles increased their lead to 16-5 after scoring nine-straight points. Damon Sherman-Newsome ended the run with a 3-pointer and then Burnatowski added two buckets with one tray to make it 18-13 with 11:41 remaining in the half. The teams traded scores over the next minute with Rolls hitting a three. Marquette then went on a little run to make it 32-20 with Juan Anderson leading the way with four points during the run.

The Raiders climbed back into the game with a short run of its own at 7-2 and with 2:30 left had cut the deficit to 34-27. The momentum didn't last long as the Golden Eagles finished off the half with eight of the last 12 points to take a 42-31 advantage at halftime. Colgate shot 41-percent from the floor in the half and 45-percent from beyond the arc. Marquette hit half of its shots attempted.

The second half started with the Golden Eagles going on a 10-4 run to open up a 52-35 lead with a couple of fast break points, including a dunk from Chris Otule. The Raiders chipped away and Burnatowski and Roh dropped in layups and with a 3-pointer from Moore, Colgate had chopped the lead to 54-42 with 15 minutes remaining.

The teams then traded free throws and then the Golden Eagles had a quick 7-0 spurt to regain their big lead and it reached a 20-point deficit for the first time in the game at 66-46 with 10:39 left. The lead stayed around 20 for the rest of the game. Colgate did cut it to 18 on a Moore tray and Roh layup with two minutes remaining, but Marquette closed out the game with a steal and a dunk from Jamal Ferguson to defeat the Raiders, 84-63.

The size of Marquette came out on the stat sheet as 50 of their 84 points came in the paint, but Colgate was able to run the floor well with 16 fast break points. Marquette shot 47.7-percent from the floor, including 6-of-13 from beyond the arc. The Raiders shot 39-percent from the floor.

“it was great to see Burnatowski get 24 and 12 against a BIG EAST team,” said Langel. “Sherman-Newsome made some really good plays and assists and Roh has really improved with 10 boards, five assists, seven points and no turnovers, against that kind of pressure was great. I feel really good about the direction we are going in.

“There is still work to be down, but we had the lead cut to five in the first half, so I am really proud of this group and I think it was a good trip for us and we saw the potential that we hope we can achieve.”

Colgate will hit the hardwood at Cotterell Court this coming Wednesday night in the season opener at 7 p.m. as the Raiders take on Marist.
