HAMILTON – The Colgate field hockey team controlled much of the play against Davidson and had a 24-13 advantage in shots, but the Wildcats scored twice in the second half to defeat the Raiders, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon.
Colgate (3-11) saw
Amanda DiDomizio make six saves in the loss. The Raiders had a big advantage in penalty corners as well at 12-5 and they had 16 of the 24 total shots on goal.
Davidson (7-7) was led by Finley Amato, who tallied three points on a goal and an assist, while Melissa Funsten had the other score for the Wildcats. The story of the day was goalie Sarah Fisher as she turned away 16 shots by the Raiders to earn the shutout. She stopped 12 shots in the second half alone.
Colgate dominated portions of the first half against Davidson earning four penalty corners and a couple of good scoring opportunities. One came on a corner with
Kelsey Jensen firing a shot just wide of the mark. The best of the half came when
Olivia Nabhan found
Eliana Brown just above the circle and the sophomore dribbled past a defender, but an aggressive challenge by Fisher stopped Brown's scoring chance. Colgate outshot the Wildcats, 9-6, in the half and had a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Davidson was able to grab the lead 1:08 into the second half on a goal from Amato. Annie Evans slid a pass to an open Amato at the top of the circle and she blasted a shot under the blocker of DiDomizio for the 1-0 lead. The Wildcats added to their advantage with 18:45 left in the game with Funsten increasing the lead to 2-0. Amato slipped a pass through traffic to the right side of the circle and Funsten fired it home.
The Raiders had many chances down the stretch with multiple penalty corners, but each time Colgate looked to have put one in the net, Fisher was there to knock it away to preserve her shutout.
Colgate will be back in action this coming Saturday as the Raiders take on American at 11:00 a.m. in a Patriot League matchup.
