Women's Hoops Drops PL Opener to American 56-43

HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/7/2012) – Alexis Dobbs scored a game-high 15 points to help lead American to a 56-43 win over Colgate in the Patriot League opener for both teams Saturday at Cotterell Court.

Colgate (3-13, 0-1) was led by Jhazmine Lynch and Mariah Jones who scored nine points apiece, while Kelly Korkowski pitched in six points, six rebounds, two blocks, one steal and an assist.

American (9-6, 1-0) opened the game with a 7-4 run, before the Raiders responded with five-straight points, including a three-pointer from Jones to take their only lead of the game 9-7 with 14:34 remaining. The Eagles then answered back with an 11-0 run over the next five minutes to build a 18-9 lead, before the Raiders answered back with a 10-4 run to make the score 22-19 with 4:52 left. American would build a 10-point lead 31-21 in the final minute, before Tricia Oakes made a layup as time expired to make the score 31-23 at halftime.

The Eagles opened the second half with a 16-5 run to build their largest lead of the game 47-28, before the Raiders responded with 12-4 run to make the score 51-40 with 2:47 left. But Dobbs answered back 20 seconds later with a three-pointer to put American up 54-40 as the Eagles would claim their ninth win of the season.

American was led by Dobbs scored a game-high 15 points, while Ebony Edwards scored a season-high 10 points with seven rebounds. Geleisa George and Tori Halvorsen each recorded eight points.

American shot 43.4 percent from the floor, including 42.9 percent from downtown, while holding the Raiders to just 27.7 percent and 18.2 percent from beyond the arc. The Eagles also won the battle on the boards 36-30, but Colgate forced 20 American turnovers and shot 16 more free-throws in the loss.

The Raiders will face Bucknell on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at Cotterell Court. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on Patriot League All-Access.

Both of the Colgate basketball teams will host the seventh annual “Shoot With The Raiders” event tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 8) at 1:00 p.m. at Cotterell Court in the Reid Athletic Center.

The event, which is open to the public, will give fans the opportunity to meet and get autographs from their favorite players and coaches. There will also be a series of skill competitions and drills for participants which include shooting, basketball relay races, and more to name a few. Admission for the event is free.
