Men's Basketball Falls at Holy Cross 76-60

WORCESTER, Mass. (1/28/12) – Three Raiders scored in double-figures but it wasn't enough as the Colgate men's basketball team fell to Holy Cross 76-60 Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center.

Junior guard Mitch Rolls scored 14 points to go along with two assists, two blocked shots and a steal to lead the Raiders, while senior guard Mike Venezia scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds. Senior forward Yaw Gyawu pitched in 12 points in 15 minutes of action, while classmate Nick Pascale scored seven.

Holy Cross (9-12, 3-4) opened the game with a 11-5 run in the first four minutes of action and was able to extend its lead to 19-7 with 13:34 left. The Raiders made a couple of baskets to trim the lead to 21-11 with 10:36 left, before the Crusaders closed the half with a 20-13 run to take a 41-24 lead into the locker room.

Holy Cross scored the first basket of the second half to build it largest lead of the game 43-24, but the Raiders responded with a 15-4 run, including back-to-back three pointers from Rolls to make score 47-39 with 16:28 left. Colgate then continued its attack with an 11-6 run over the next seven minutes to trim the lead to 53-50, but that was as close as the game would get as the Crusaders were able to close the game with a 23-10 run to grab their third League win of the season.

Devin Brown finished with a game-high 27 points to lead Holy Cross, while Phil Beans scored 16 and R.J. Evans added 11.

Holy Cross shot 46.4 percent from the floor, including 8-of-20 from beyond the arc, while Colgate shot 37.3 percent overall and 8-of-22 from downtown. Holy Cross also won the battle on the boards 43-29, but Colgate distributed 16 assists while only turning the ball over a season low five times, for the second-straight game.

Colgate (6-15, 1-6) will conclude its non-conference slate with a trip to NJIT on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
