Men's Basketball Falls at Army 91-75

WEST POINT, N.Y. (1/18/2012) – Three Raiders scored in double figures but it wasn't enough as the Colgate men's basketball team fell to Army 91-75 Wednesday night at Christl Arena. Colgate held a 45-41 lead at halftime, but was outscored 50-30 in the second half.

Senior Mike Venezia led the Raiders with a team-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 2-of-3 from downtown to pass the director of basketball operations Mark Linebaugh '04 for fifth all-time in school history with 174. Sophomore Pat Moore was second on the team with 15 points, while junior Mitch Rolls pitched in 14. Senior Sterling Melville scored nine in the loss, while freshman Luke Roh matched a career-high with eight points.

Colgate (5-13, 0-4) opened the game with five-straight points from Rolls and Moore, before the Black Knights battled back to tie the score 7-7 with 17 minutes remaining. Both teams then exchanged baskets for the next two minutes, before Rolls drained his second three-pointer to give Colgate a 14-12 lead during the first media timeout. The Raiders then extended their lead to 18-12 on four-straight points from Roh, before the Black Knights answered back with a 9-2 run to reclaim a one-point lead 21-20 with 10 minutes left. Moore then drained back-to-back three-pointers and Melville added a layup to give Colgate a 28-21 lead with 8:27 remaining. After the Black Knights trimmed the Raiders lead to 32-30 with six minutes left, Colgate exploded with a 13-2 run to build its largest lead of the game 45-32 with 3:14 remaining. But the lead didn't last to long as the Black Knights closed the half with a 9-0 run to trim the Raiders lead to 45-41. Moore scored all of his points in the first half as he connected on 6-of-7 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from downtown.

Army (9-510 2-2) started the second half with a 21-6 run to build a 62-51 lead with 13 minutes remaining. The Raiders tried to bounce back as Rolls hit a three pointer to spark a 7-2 run to trim the lead to 63-58 with 10:39 left. But that was as close as the game would get as Army closed game by scoring 28 of the next 45 points to claim its second Patriot League win of the season.

Julian Simmons finished with a game-high 24 points to lead Army, while Ella Ellis scored 22 points with six rebounds and five assists.

Army shot 53.2 percent from the floor, including 55.2 percent from three-point range, while Colgate shot 51.7 percent overall and 42.9 percent from downtown. Colgate won the battle on the boards 32-28, but turned the ball over 17 times, which resulted in 14 points.

The Raiders will host Navy on Saturday, Jan. 21. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Cotterell Court and will be aired live on Time Warner Cable Sports.
