ITHACA, N.Y. (9/7/11)
- The Colgate women's soccer team defeated Cornell 3-0 on Wednesday night to secure its third win of the season after outshooting the Big Red 18-8 in the game.

Junior Jillian Kinter and freshmen Caroline Brawner and Jenna Raepple scored a goal each for the Raiders in their first shut out win of the season. Goalkeeper Ashley Walsh made two stops in 85 minutes of action to earn the shutout.

Colgate (3-3) came out to an attacking start in the first half, generating some offense in the opening minutes to set the tone. As the half progressed, the Raiders continued to hold the shooting advantage as they fired one shot after another at Cornell's net but could not capitalize. With less than 20 minutes left in the first half, the Big Red began to find some rhythm in its offense as it attempted to relieve the pressure on its backfield. However, despite a scoreless half, it was Colgate that was the more productive team, outshooting Cornell 10-5.

The Raiders' aggressive start was mirrored in the second 45 minutes of play, as they continued to search for an opening goal. Their hard work soon paid off less than two minutes into the half, when Brawner picked up a pass from sophomore Kelsey Hough and fired it into the net to give her team a 1-0 lead. Wanting to find a second cushion goal, Colgate continued to put pressure on the Big Red's defense and eventually broke through at the 54:34 mark to extend its lead to 2-0. The goal was scored by Kinter with an assist from classmate Alyssa Manoogian.

With two goals from its first two shots of the half, the Raiders sent a flurry of shots towards Cornell's net looking for success once again but could not beat goalkeeper. Megan Bartlett, who made a series of saves to keep her team in the game. Feeling the pressure, Cornell tried to return the favor, but its efforts did not phase the Raiders, who soon found a goal from Raepple in the 70th minute that eventually gave the team the 3-0 win.

"After a slow start, I was pleased to see the team pick things up for an exciting second half," said head coach Kathy Brawn. "Ashley was tremendous in goal, Emma came up with a solid performance to preserve the shutout and Brawner had another outstanding game."

Colgate will resume play on the road this weekend when it travels to Albany and Boston College for matchups on Sept. 9 and 11 respectively.
