NEW HAVEN, Conn. (9/3/11) –
After dropping the first match of the day to Yale, the Colgate women's volleyball team rebounded with a 3-0 sweep of Boston College in its final match of the Yale Invitational on Saturday evening.

Colgate (2-4) lost to the Bulldogs by a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-18) score and beat the Eagles 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-23).

Kaylee Dougherty had her best performance of the season with 11 kills and a .348 hitting percentage. Kaylee Fifer, once again, was all over the court with eight kills, 28 assists and nine digs. Lindsay Young also tallied eight kills and 14 digs and Caitlin Cremin had a career-high 20 digs in the win. Fifer was named to the all-tournament team.

Boston College (1-4) got nine kills from Dureva Tsvetelina, but the Eagle offense had a tough day with just 25 kills and the frontline committed 21 errors to record a .034 hitting percentage. Cagla Sen posted 15 helpers, while Brennan Clark had a match-high 24 digs.

"That was a very good win against a good ACC school," said head coach Ryan Baker. "We are battling injuries and players in new positions yet we still came away with a win."

The first set was all Colgate out of the gate as the Raiders opened a 6-2 lead with kills by Young, Fifer and Dougherty. The Eagles fought back to get to within one at 7-6, but Diane Seely and Kenzie Hume stepped up with kills to increase the lead back up to 9-6. From there, Colgate never gave up the lead and opened a 16-8 lead thanks to multiple Eagle errors and kills by Dougherty and Young. Boston College made it interesting by slicing the lead down to 22-18, but Seely and Hume put the final touches on the first set with the last two kills in a 25-19 win.

The Raiders raced to an 11-4 lead in the second set with kills from five different players. Colgate kept the pressure on and built a huge 22-9 lead and held off a late charge by the Eagles for a 25-17 win to go up 2-0 in the match. Colgate saw Dougherty, Young and Seely have three kills apiece in the set, while Cremin had 12 digs in the set.

The third set was by far the most dramatic of the season for Colgate. The Raiders jumped out to a 7-3 lead, which was countered by nine-straight points from Boston College, who took the lead away at 12-7. The Eagles held onto the lead and it got as high as 23-15. However, Colgate didn't quit and reeled off an impressive and dramatic comeback with 10-straight points to close out the match with a 25-23 victory in the third set. During the run, Fifer had two of her five kills in the set, while Hume added a pair of kills.

"Fifer did a great job leading when her team needed her to and they rallied around her," mentioned Baker.

Against Yale, Seely led the Raiders for the second-straight match with nine kills, while Lindsay Young had eight kills. Fifer recorded 27 assists and Cremin finished with a match-high 12 digs.

Yale (2-0) got 10 kills from McHaney Carter and seven from Erice Reetz, along with nine digs. Kendall Polan posted 33 helpers for the Elis.

The first set got off to bad start for the Raiders as Yale took nine of the first 12 points to take an early 9-3 lead. Colgate, however, inched its way back and cut the lead to 11-8 with a short 5-2 run that included a kill by Fifer and a solo block from Hume. The Bulldogs bounced back and went up 17-10 with kills from five different players and a few Raider attack errors. Once down by seven, it was tough for Colgate to get back in the set and Yale took the 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-14 set win.

In the second set, the teams traded points until Yale was able to capitalize on a couple of Colgate errors to take a small 14-12 lead midway through the set. Up to that point in the set, the Raiders had five different players with kills, including three from Seely and two from Young and Hume. The Bulldogs held onto that two-point lead the rest of the match, not allowing Colgate to get back in it. The Raiders got as close as 19-17, but Yale finished off the set with a 6-2 run and earned the 25-19 win.

Yale grabbed an early 7-4 lead in the third set after four-straight points on three Colgate errors and a kill by Mollie Rogers. The Raiders jumped back in the set with a four-point run as well with two kills from Fifer and an assisted block by Fifer and Hume. Colgate then earned its largest lead of the match at 12-9 with three-straight errors by the Elis and a kill by Young. The advantage didn't last long as Yale went on a 9-2 run to take the lead back at 18-14. That run by the Bulldogs put the set and the match out of reach for Colgate and Yale took home a 3-0 win with a 25-18 victory in the final set.

Next up for the Raiders will be the Villanova Invitational on Sept. 9 and 10, where Colgate will face the host Wildcats, TCU and Loyola of Maryland.
