BOX SCORE

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (9/24/11) –
The Colgate field hockey team held advantages in shots and penalty corners, but it was Bryant who came out on top as the Raiders were shutout, 4-0, by the Bulldogs on Saturday.

Colgate (3-6) got six saves from Amanda DiDomizio, but it wasn't enough in the loss. The Raiders earned the advantage in shots by a 13-12 margin and dominated in penalty corners with 11 on the day to only six for the Bulldogs.

Bryant (4-4) saw Rosie Bird score two goals and Chiedza Mawema passed out two assists in the win. Emily Charpentier and Brittany Vasconcelos also scored for the Bulldogs and Megan Hancock had four stops for her fourth win of the year.

Bryant was able to take an early 1-0 lead at the 11-minute mark on a penalty stroke goal. Colgate blocked the initial shot, but committed a foul in the front of the net that resulted in the chance and Rosie Bird scored on the stroke to make it 1-0. The second Bulldog goal came after DiDomizio made a stop on Mawema, but she was able to get the rebound and found Bird. Bird then flicked the ball over DiDomizio for her second goal of the contest with the assist to Mawema.

The lead was increased to 3-0 with just under six minutes remaining in the half as Charpentier scored her first goal of the season on a penalty corner. The shot come on a second chance during the corner and Mawema was credited with her second helper of the game. The shots were almost even in the first half as Bryant held an 8-6 advantage. The Raiders won the corner battle with five earned to just three for Bryant.

In the second half, Bryant increased the lead to 4-0 with a goal at the 20:31 mark as Vasconcelos tallied her second goal of the year. Colgate seven shots and seven corners in the second half, but couldn't solve Hancock.

The Raiders will be back on the field tomorrow for a 12:00 p.m. start at Brown.

NOTES: Colgate was shutout for the second time this year with the first coming against Quinnipiac on Sept. 9 … the 13 shots were the second highest this season and Colgate reached 100 shots for the season … first time in the last four games the Raiders have not played in a one-goal game.
