HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/20/11) – Colgate women's soccer senior
Maddie Malone was able to “Bend it Like Beckham” and score a stunning goal off a free kick in the 108th minute from the top of the box, to give the team a 2-1 double-overtime win over Dartmouth on Tuesday evening.
The Raiders fought back from a one-goal deficit in the second half, finding a goal from junior
Alyssa Manoogian, to send the game into overtime.
In the first half, it was Dartmouth that came out to the offensive start, playing majority of the game in Colgate's (5-4) defensive end as it attempted to find an early goal. As the game progressed, it began to even out with both teams attacking their opponent's net, but it was the Raiders that held majority of the scoring opportunities. The team had a couple of close opportunities, first with a sliding kick from junior
Jillian Kinter that went just wide, and then from a firm header by Kinter once again, but could not find the back of the Big Green's net. Colgate's closest attempt of the half came in the final minute of play when sophomore
Klara Jenkins headed the ball out of the keeper's reach but was denied by a Dartmouth defender who stopped the ball on the line to keep the score at 0-0 at half time. The Raiders outshot the Big Green 9-2 in the first half.
The second half was very physical, starting out with a series of fouls called against Dartmouth. This did not deter the Big Green, which then went on to find a goal in 55th minute after discovering a hole in the Raiders' defense to take the 1-0 lead. With a goal in its favor, Dartmouth continued to attack, finding a close opportunity at the 65:54 mark off a header, but an impressive defensive save from
Chelsea Roche was able to keep Colgate in the game. Feeling the pressure, the Raiders then picked up their pace, finding a corner kick minutes later that would turn things around. Malone quickly passed the corner ball to freshman
Caroline Brawner who then crossed the ball into the box with her left foot to Manoogian, who then headed it into the left corner of the frame to give her team the equalizer at the 67:33 mark. With the score tied at 1-1, the game became more aggressive as both teams searched for a game winner. Colgate continued to hold the shooting advantage, creating a few threatening opportunities in the closing minutes, but at the end of regulation time the game remained tied.
The first overtime period was even more physical than the second half, with both teams attempting to find a goal off a fast break. The Big Green found the closest opportunity of the 10-minute period, when a forward blasted the ball on net but junior
Ashley Walsh was able to make a solid save to keep the score at 1-1.
Determined to find its fifth win of the season, the Raiders came out to an attacking start in the final overtime period, finding a solid shot on goal but could not get past Dartmouth's goalkeeper. The Big Green then turned things around, putting pressure on Colgate's defense but then, with just two minutes left, Dartmouth committed a foul on Manoogian at the top of the box, giving the Raiders a dangerous free kick. Then, like the end of a perfect soccer movie, Malone was able to find the game-winner from a magnificent free kick at the 108:05 mark that curled round the defense's wall into the top left corner to give the Raiders the 2-1 win.
Walsh had two saves for Colgate while Dartmouth's Colleen Hogan had three.
The team will resume play on Friday, Sept. 23 when it travels to St. Bonaventure for a matchup at 3 p.m.
