WEST POINT, N.Y. (2/5/11)
– Despite a late comeback in the final minute of the game, the Colgate women's basketball team could not push past Army, suffering a 55-54 setback to the Black Knights on Saturday afternoon. The Raiders were able to cut down a lead that was once 17 points in the first half to just one point in the final seconds of the game, but could not secure the win.

Sophomore Jhazmine Lynch led the team in scoring with a game-high 14 points and six rebounds while senior Tayler Wejnert had 13 points and a team-best nine rebounds in the game.

Army was first on the scoreboard, hitting a three-pointer less than one minute into the game to take the 3-0 lead. Colgate (7-15, 2-6 PL) then answered back with a jumper to put the score at 3-2 with its first basket of the game. As the half progressed, it was the Black Knights that became more productive, going on a 4-0 run to put the score at 7-2 at the 15:45 mark. Army continued its offensive momentum and by the 10-minute mark, the Black Knights had extended their lead to 14 points with an 18-4 score. The Raiders attempted to make a comeback but were met by a strong Army defense that made some solid plays and forced Colgate to make a series of turnovers as it extended its lead to 26-9 at the 6:33 mark. The Raiders were finally able to find their offensive rhythm in the final minutes but by half time, the Black Knights maintained a 32-20 advantage.

Colgate carried its scoring momentum into the second half, opening scoring with three points in the first minute of play. Army soon picked up its pace as the teams continued to trade baskets, holding an 11-point advantage midway through the second half with the score at 49-38. However, as the clock wound down, the Raiders found their rhythm once again, going on an impressive 10-2 run to put the score at 51-48 with just 2:13 left. Both teams picked up their intensity in the last two minutes of play as the Black Knights attempted to keep their composure with some important baskets to extend their lead by six with just one minute left. Feeling its comeback slipping away, Colgate then made a series of strong plays, which included a layup and misplay by Army with four seconds left, to make it a one-point game. However, a costly turnover by the Raiders in the final seconds of play resulted in Army winning its fifth league game of the season, 55-54.

“We fought hard in the second half,” stated head coach Pamela Bass. “The comeback was tremendous. We are still working on playing for forty minutes but I was impressed by our rebounding effort and I think our guards did an excellent job attacking the glass.”

Colgate had a 34.5 field goal percentage and was 11-of-15 from the charity stripe.

The team will resume play on the road when they travel to Lafayette on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in Easton, Pa.
