ANNAPOLIS, Md. (2/26/11) – Junior
Yaw Gyawu scored in double-digits for the 21st time this season but it wasn't enough as Colgate concluded its regular season with a loss to Navy 75-55 on Saturday at Alumni Hall. With the loss the Raiders finished seventh in league play and will face No. 2 American on Wednesday in Bender Arena.
Gyawu finished with a team-high 12 points and six rebounds, while senior captain
Joe Hoban and sophomore point guard
Mitch Rolls scored 10 points apiece. Junior forward
Sterling Melville added nine points and six rebounds, while classmate
Nick Pascale recorded three blocked shots.
Navy (11-19, 6-8) opened the game with an 11-0 run and never looked back as it secured the fifth seed in the Patriot League Tournament. But the Raiders didn't go down easy. After trailing 18-3 through the first four minutes of action Colgate responded with a 12-0 run to make the score 18-15 with just over eight minutes left. Pat Moore and junior
Mike Venezia. The Mids closed out the half with a 13-9 run to take a 31-24 lead into the locker room.
Colgate (7-22, 4-10) would trim the Mids lead to 33-28 early in the second half after a Gyawu tip-in, but Navy answered back with a 6-0 run to build a 39-28 lead with 15 minutes remaining. The Raiders would make the score 41-33 after a pair of free throws from Melville, but that was as close the score would get as Navy went on a 30-13 run to build its largest lead of the game 71-46. Colgate finished the game with a 9-4 run to make the final score 75-55.
Navy was led by Jordan Sugars who scored a game-high 25 points, while J.J. Avila and Greg Brown recorded 12 points apiece.
Colgate will travel to face No. 2 seeded American on Wednesday, March 2 in the Patriot League Quarterfinals. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Bender Arena and will be aired live on CBS College Sports Network.
