PL TOURNAMENT SEEDING SCENARIOS
The Raiders will be the No. 7 seed in the Patriot League Tournament unless they lose to Navy and Army wins at Bucknell, which would drop Colgate to the No. 8 spot.
The Mids can rise up to the No. 5 seed with a win over Colgate, an American win over Lafayette and a Holy Cross victory over Lehigh. In any other instance Navy takes the No. 6 seed.
SCOUTING COLGATE (7-21, 4-9 PL)
The Raiders put together an incredible comeback, but Holy Cross hit two foul shots with 1.6 seconds left for a 77-75 win on Wednesday at Cotterell Court. Colgate had won three straight games over Holy Cross and was going for its second consecutive sweep of the season series, but instead the teams split the matchups for the first time since 2004.
Colgate trailed throughout the game, and appeared to be out of it down 68-56 with 4:26 left. But the Raiders charged back on an 11-2 run and a three-point play by
Nick Pascale made it 70-67 with 1:43 left. Holy Cross answered with a three-point play of its own with just 40 seconds to go, but Colgate continued its unlikely comeback as a
Joe Hoban layup and
Mitch Rolls three-pointer were sandwiched with 2-for-4 foul shooting by the Crusaders to get the Raiders within 75-72 with 13 seconds left.
Mike Venezia finally brought the Raiders all the way back on a three-pointer that tied the score at 75 with 5.5 seconds left, but the Crusaders went down the court, drew a foul and converted the free throws to win.
The Raiders came up short in part because of 11-of-20 shooting at the foul line, as they were just under 50 percent (29-of-59) from the field.
Yaw Gyawu had a team-high 15 points, while Rolls scored 14 and Pascale finished with 13. Rolls had seven of the team's 14 assists, while Pascale pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
SCOUTING NAVY (10-19, 5-8 PL)
The Mids fell out of contention to host a game in the Patriot League quarterfinals as they could not rally all the way back in a 69-58 loss at American on Wednesday. The teams split the season series for the first time since 2006, and are at 37-37 in all-time matchups.
The Eagles scored 15 straight points to build an early 24-11 lead, but Navy chipped it down to nine points at halftime and six early in the second half. Another run in the second half put the Eagles up 16, but Navy charged back with an 11-1 run to get as close as 57-53 with 4:29 to play. It was still a four-point margin with under three minutes to play when American ran off a game-clinching 10-1 rally and went on to the 69-58 victory.
Greg Brown led the Mids with 16 points while making 5-of-9 shots and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, while Jordan Sugars had 11 points and J.J. Avila scored 10. Navy's overall shooting came in at just 18-of-51, though the Mids were better from long range at 10-of-24. Navy had 11 steals in the game.
HOBAN STEALING THE SHOW
Senior captain
Joe Hoban currently has 47 steals on the season, which ranks third in the Patriot League and 19th all-time at Colgate. Hoban also has 102 steals in his career that sits 16th all-time at Colgate. He is only the 17th Colgate player to record 100 or more steals in a career.
