HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/21/11) – The Colgate women's basketball team will travel to Worcester, Mass. for a matchup against Patriot League opponent, Holy Cross, on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. This will be the Raiders final regular-season game on the road.
Colgate (7-19, 2-10 PL) is coming off a 79-64 setback to Bucknell on Saturday. Senior
Tayler Wejnert led the team in scoring with 17 points and five rebounds while sophomore
Jhazmine Lynch and senior
Krista Moser contributed 16 and 12 points respectively. Moser also led the team in rebounds with six.
WHO'S HOT?
Wejnert accumulated a total of 39 points last week with a game-high 22 points against Lehigh and 17 points against the Bison. She has played and started in all 26 games this season, leading the team in scoring on 10 occassions, twice with 22 points. Wejnert has also led the team in rebounding in six games, recording her first double-double of the season against Navy on Jan. 29 with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
PATRIOT LEAGUE PLAY
Colgate is currently sitting in eighth place in the league standings with a 2-10 record. The team has wins over Navy and Lafayette, and has suffered setbacks to Army, American, Lehigh and Bucknell twice. The Raiders also have losses to Holy Cross and Lafayette. American sits at the top of the standings with a 9-3 record. The Eagles along with Navy and Lehigh have all clinched home games in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Tournament.
COURT LEADERS
Wejnert leads the team in scoring with 12.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. She is followed by Lynch who averages 11.9 points and a league-high 2.4 steals per game while Moser, who is averaging 7.1 points per game, continues to lead the team in rebounding with a 6.9 average.
TEAM STATS
The Raiders lead the league in defensive rebounds (26.2 rebounds per game), and are second in three-point field goal percentage (.344) and in rebounding offense (38.6 rebounds per game).
THE SERIES
Holy Cross leads the all-time series, owning a 42-3 record against the Raiders. Since the teams first met in the 1990-91 season, the Crusaders have held the advantage with Colgate's only three wins coming in the 1993-94, 2003-04 and 2005-06 seasons, all of which were on Cotterell Court. Holy Cross won the last meeting between the two teams earlier this season 62-51 on Jan. 26 in Hamilton, N.Y.
SCOUTING HOLY CROSS
The Crusaders (9-18, 5-7 PL) are coming off a 73-62 loss to American on Saturday and a 73-68 overtime loss to Navy on Wednesday. The team, which is currently in sixth place in the league standings above Lafayette and Colgate, has wins over Lafayette twice, Bucknell, Colgate and Army and has suffered losses to Army, Navy, American, Lehigh and Bucknell. It lost to the Eagles and the Mids twice.
Picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll, Holy Cross is led by senior Whitney Fremeau and freshman Alex Smith. Fremeau, who is second in the league in scoring, leads the team with 14.4 points and 4.4 rebounds per game while Smith, who averages 11.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, also leads the league in three-point field goals made with 3.0 per game. Sophomore Amy Lepley leads the team in rebounding with a 5.6 average.
PRESEASON POLL
The Raiders were picked to finish tied at sixth with Lafayette in the Patriot League Preseason Poll that was released on Oct. 28. Last season's runner-up, American, was picked to finish first with a total of 93 points and nine first-place votes, which was two points over defending champions, Lehigh, who had 91 points and seven first-place votes. Following the Eagles and Mountain Hawks are Navy (70), Army (59), Holy Cross (42), Colgate (40), Lafayette (40) and Bucknell (31).
