SCOUTING COLGATE (6-18, 3-6 PL)
The Raiders saw Lafayette drain 13 three-pointers in an 80-65 loss on Wednesday (Feb. 9) at Cotterell Court. The loss marked the first time Colgate was swept by the Leopards since 2006.
The game was tight in the early minutes, but Lafayette took the lead for good with an 11-2 run to take a 22-13 advantage midway through the first half. Ben Wheeler, Nick Petkovich and Jim Mower each drilled three-pointers during the stretch. The Leopards gained further control with another run late in the first half, scoring 13 straight points to open up a 37-21 lead and riding it to a 41-25 advantage at halftime.
After two straight games over 50 percent from the field and three-point range, Colgate could not match Lafayette's shooting on and finished 23-of-49 from the field and 6-of-14 from three-point range, and had a tough 13-of-26 night at the foul line.
Mitch Rolls led the Raiders with 12 points, while
Joe Hoban had 11 and
Mike Venezia finished with 10. Colgate had won the second meeting against Lafayette for the past four years, but could not keep that streak alive.
SCOUTING AMERICAN (16-8, 6-3 PL)
The Eagles fell to Bucknell 66-60 Wednesday after a 9-0 run by the Bison late secured a sweep of the season series for a second straight year.
Bucknell had outscored its Patriot League opponents by 11.0 points per game coming into the contest, and it appeared the Bison were heading in that direction again when they opened up an 11-2 lead to start the game and pushed it as high as 14 midway through the first half. But American would fight back from the deficit, getting as close as three points before Bucknell built the lead back to 36-28 at the break.
Troy Brewer led the Eagles with 13 points, while Munoz and Stephen Lumpkins each finished with 11. American went 9-of-19 from three-point range, but their overall field goal (18-of-47) and free throw (15-of-23) percentages were costly. The Eagles lost at Bucknell for the 10th time in the last 11 meetings.
HOBAN AND MOORE SWEEP PL WEEKLY AWARDS
Colgate senior captain
Joe Hoban and freshman
Pat Moore were named the Patriot League Anaconda Player and Rookie of the Week. Hoban and Moore combined to give the Raiders a sweep of the weekly awards for the first time since Feb. 17, 2003.
Hoban earned his first Patriot League/Anaconda Player of the Week award after posting a pair of 20-point games in wins for the Raiders. Hoban recorded his first career double-double against Longwood with 22 points and 13 assists, then followed with 20 points and seven rebounds against Army.
Moore received his first Patriot League/Anaconda Rookie of the Week award after averaging 15.5 points and shooting over 65 percent in two wins for the Raiders. Moore did most of his damage in Wednesday's 97-86 win over Longwood, making 10-of-12 shots to finish with a career-high 23 points. He followed that up with eight points in Saturday's 77-71 win over Army.
1,000 POINTS AND COUNTING
Junior forward
Yaw Gyawu recently became the 28th player in school history to join the 1,000 point club. Gyawu leads Colgate in scoring this season with 12.7 points per game.
CLEANING THE GLASS
Junior center
Nick Pascale is one of four student-athletes in the Patriot League to average six or more rebounds and one blocked shot per game. Pascale ranks third in the Patriot League with 1.3 blocked shots and sixth with 6.7 rebounds per game.
RED-HOT COLGATE SHOOTS THE LIGHTS OUT
If you only saw Colgate play last week, you would have no idea the Raiders are last in the Patriot League in scoring offense and seventh in both overall and three-point field-goal percentage. Colgate did not look like that squad in the past two games, notching the best marks in the Patriot League this season at 66 percent overall (33-of-50) and 68.8 percent from three-point range (11-of-16) in a 97-86 win over Longwood on Wednesday and following it up by shooting over 50 percent (28-of-55) overall and nearly 59 percent (10-of-17) from three-point range in Saturday's win over Army.
THE DAVIS FILE
Head coach Emmett Davis (St. Lawrence, 1984) is in his 13th year in charge at Colgate, owning the most wins in school history with 164.
During coach Davis' decade long tenure, the Colgate program has been a model of consistency. In nine of his 12 seasons, Davis has led the Raiders to either the upper division of the Patriot League standings or advanced the team to the semifinals or finals of the conference tournament. From 2001-2004 the Raiders finished with three consecutive regular season winning records (2001-02…17-10, 2002-03…14-13, and 2003-04…14-13) and in 2007-08 the Raiders tied the school record for wins in a season with 18.
Davis reached another career milestone in November 2005, as Colgate defeated Matt Doherty's Florida Atlantic team 78-74 earning coach Davis his 100th career victory making him just the fifth coach in school history to win 100 games.
