HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/10/11) – The Colgate women's basketball team will return to Cotterell Court this weekend when it hosts American on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. The matchup will be the Raiders'
Pink Zone game, which is part of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) initiative to raise breast cancer awareness and promote early detection, and will also be part of the National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration.
Colgate (7-16, 2-7 PL) is coming off a 65-42 setback against Lafayette on Wednesday. Senior
Krista Moser led the Raiders in scoring with 10 points and a team-best seven rebounds, while freshman
Lauryn Kobiela was second on the team with seven points in the game.
PATRIOT LEAGUE PLAY
Colgate is currently sitting in eighth place in the league standings with a 2-7 record. The team has wins over Navy and Lafayette, and has suffered setbacks to Army twice, American, Lehigh, Bucknell, Holy Cross and most recently Lafayette. Navy sits at the top of the standings with a 7-2 record and is followed by American, which has a 6-3 record.
COURT LEADERS
Sophomore
Jhazmine Lynch continues to lead the team in scoring with 12.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. She also leads the league in steals with an average of 2.4 per game. Lynch is followed by senior
Tayler Wejnert who is averaging 12.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game Moser, who averages 6.8 points per game, continues to lead the team in rebounds with a 6.6 average.
TEAM STATS
The Raiders lead the league in three-point field goal percentage (.345) and defensive rebounds (27.0 rebounds per game), and are second in rebounding offense (39.2 rebounds per game).
THE SERIES
American leads the all-time series, owning an 18-6 record against the Raiders since the teams first met in the 2001-02 season. Colgate has played nine games against the Eagles on Cotterell Court, winning two of those meetings in the 2004-05 and 2006-07 seasons for a 2-7 home record. American won the last meeting between the two teams 66-59 on Jan. 15 in Washington, D.C.
SCOUTING AMERICAN
The Eagles (16-7, 6-3 PL) are coming off a 66-38 win over Bucknell on Wednesday night. The team, which is currently sitting in second place in the league standings below Navy, has wins over Lehigh, Bucknell twice, Colgate, Holy Cross and Lafayette and has losses to Army, Navy and Lehigh.
Picked to finish first in the preseason poll, American is led by senior Liz Leer and junior Lisa Strack. Leer, who leads the league in field goal percentage (.495) and three-point field goal percentage (.443), leads the team in scoring and in rebounds with 12.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. She is followed by Strack who averages 11.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
PRESEASON POLL
The Raiders were picked to finish tied at sixth with Lafayette in the Patriot League Preseason Poll that was released on Oct. 28. Last season's runner-up, American, was picked to finish first with a total of 93 points and nine first-place votes, which was two points over defending champions, Lehigh, who had 91 points and seven first-place votes. Following the Eagles and Mountain Hawks are Navy (70), Army (59), Holy Cross (42), Colgate (40), Lafayette (40) and Bucknell (31).
