HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/27/11) – The Colgate women's hockey team dropped the second game of the set against Vermont 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in Starr Rink.

Despite outshooting Vermont 29-13, with a 13-3 advantage in the third period, the Raiders could not find the back of the net. The teams split the weekend, with Colgate (6-10-1, 2-4-1) winning the first game 5-1 on Saturday.
 
In the opening period it was clear that the Catamounts were looking for an early goal. Vermont's attacking start earned it a power play advantage just 47 seconds into play. The Catamounts used the advantage to send a flurry of shots towards senior goalie Kimberly Sass but could not capitalize. It was not until a penalty on Vermont in the fourth minute that Colgate was able to find its offensive momentum and create some scoring opportunities. However, at the 13:42 mark, it was the Catamounts that were able to get on the scoreboard first and hold their 1-0 lead going into the second 20 minutes of play.
 
The second frame started off a little shaky for Colgate, which came into the period with one less skater due to a penalty late in the first period. Vermont took advantage of the unsettled Raiders, tallying its second goal at the 4:33 mark to increase its lead to 2-0. Colgate then found itself with a pair of power play opportunities as the period progressed but could not beat goalie Roxanne Douville who made one strong save after another. A series of penalties on both teams in the closing minutes of the half had them both playing down a player at one point, but at the end of the stanza the Catamounts still held a 2-0 lead.
 
Despite being at a disadvantage once against for the first 28 seconds of the third period, the Raiders came out to an aggressive start in search of an early goal to cut Vermont's lead. They came close in the fifth minute when junior Jenna Klynstra skated around the goal and hooked the puck into the bottom right corner but it rebounded off the post. Colgate continued to hold the shooting advantage as it fired one shot after another at the frame but could not find the back of the net. With less than four minutes left, Colgate called a timeout and returned with a sixth skater in place of a goalie to try and spark some more offense. This left the Raiders vulnerable at the back with an empty net however, some strong blocks and an incredible save by senior co-captain Amanda Kirwan in the 17th minute, was enough to keep the score at 2-0. Colgate then returned Sass into the net to even things out but then a pair of late penalties on the Raiders allowed Vermont to score a power play goal at the 19:40 mark on a 5-on-3 advantage to secure a 3-0 shutout win.
 
Kimberly Sass had 10 saves for Colgate while Douville had 29 stops for the Catamounts. The Raiders went scoreless on five power play chances while Vermont scored on one of its nine extra skater opportunities.
 
Colgate will take a break from competition until Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 when it hosts Syracuse in its final non-conference game of the season at 7 p.m. in Starr Rink.
