ITHACA, N.Y. (10/4/11) – The Colgate field hockey team got back on the winning track with a 1-0 shutout victory over Cornell on a cold Tuesday evening in upstate New York.
Colgate (5-7) saw
Lauren Dittman score her fifth goal of the season, which ties her with
Olivia Nabhan for the team lead and the pair have 12 points apiece on the year. The Raiders did a great job keeping the Big Red away from the net and did not allow a shot on goal in the entire game. Cornell failed to register any type of shot in the second half.
Amanda DiDomizio earned her fifth win and third shutout without making a save.
Cornell (3-6) got one save from Alex Botte, who took the loss, while Carolyn Horner came in at the start of the second half and made two stops for the home team.
The Raiders earned the first penalty corner of the game with 20 minutes left in the half and made it count. Andriana Libutti inserted on the play and sent a pass to
Kendall Zaharris, who stick-stopped the ball for Dittman to power through it. She lifted a shot past the Big Red keeper to give Colgate an early 1-0 lead. Libutti and Zaharris were each given assists on the play.
Cornell tried to answer with a pair of corners, but the Raiders blocked a shot and the second try was sent wide. The Big Red had a 6-4 shot advantage, but the Raiders had the only shot on the goal in the opening half.
The second half was a struggle on both sides of the field as Colgate managed just three total shots, while the Big Red failed to try and get a ball on goal. Colgate earned two penalty corners in the second half, while the Big Red got none. Overall, the shot advantage went to Colgate at 7-6 and the penalty corners were 3-2 in favor of the Raiders.
Colgate will be back in league play on Saturday as the Raiders head to Lehigh, looking to even their conference record.
