HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/15/11) - The Raiders fought hard, but came up short as the Colgate women's volleyball team suffered a tough 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 23-25, 25-14, 15-11) defeat by Army Saturday night at Cotterell Court.
Colgate (9-12, 5-2 PL) got a third-consecutive double-double from
Kaylee Fifer as she dished out 46 assists along with 11 digs, while
Lindsay Young put down 18 kills.
Caitlin Cremin led the Raiders with 19 digs, and
Blaire Safir wasn't far behind with 18.
Army (15-6, 6-1 PL) got a game-high 19 kills from Megan Wilton, while Ariana Mankus and Margaux Jarka each had 18 strikes. Mary Vaccaro contributed to the point scoring with a match-high 56 assists to go along with 13 digs for a double-double. D.J. Phee had a match-high 23 digs for the black knights.
The Black Knights took control of the first set of the match after seeing the score tied at 5-5 apiece. Army then went on a 20-14 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Young led the Raiders with four kills, while
Kaylee Fifer racked up 8 assists in the opening set.
The second set saw the score knotted at 5-5 apiece once again with a pair of aces from
Kaylee Dougherty, but the Raiders could not use that momentum to separate from Army. The two teams were tied at 12-12 apiece until the Raiders went on a 13-8 run to even up the match at one set apiece with a 25-20 win. Young was once again stellar in the second set recording five kills, while Safir got her fingernails dirty with seven digs. Fifer allowed the Raiders to score as she provided 13 assists in the set.
The two teams battled deep into the set as the score was tied at 23-23. Young broke the tie with a thunderous kill, which made it 24-23. Then
Kaylee Dougherty finished off the Black Knights with a service ace to win the set 25-23 and gain a 2-1 advantage in the match. The third set saw 16 ties and eight lead changes.
Both teams carried the same intensity into the fourth set as both Army and Colgate once again went point-for-point as the teams were tied at 7-7. The Black Knights managed some breathing room with a 13-7 lead after a quick 6-0 run. Once Army gained control of the lead, the Raiders could do nothing more. Fabiola Castro would finish off the Raiders with a service ace of her own as Army took the set 25-14 and tied the match 2-2.
Army jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the fifth set, but the Raiders fought back and scored three unanswered points to tie the score at 8-8. The Black Knights had a response of their own with a 7-3 run to take the set 15-11 and the match 3-2, as an attack by Young went wide.
Colgate will be back in action on Wednesday as the Raiders take on Albany at 7 p.m. at Cotterell Court.
