SCOUTING COLGATE (1-12, 0-0 PL)
The Raiders are coming off a 95-40 loss at Maryland on Tuesday (Jan. 4) after an 80-61 thumping of Longwood on Sunday (Jan. 2). The win snapped an 11-game losing streak to start the season and improved Colgate's record on January 2nd to 3-1. Colgate's worst start was 0-13 during the 1986-87 season. That team finished the season 4-23 overall.
Colgate opened the Longwood game with a 5-0 run and never looked back as it led from start to finish for the win. Longwood trimmed the Raiders lead to 5-4 early in the first half, but that was as close as the Lancers would get. Colgate responded with a 12-2 run to build a 17-6 lead with 11:33 remaining. The Raiders then finished the half with a 27-15 run to take a 44-21 lead into the locker room.
Sophomore forward
Brandon James (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and junior center
Nick Pascale (DeWitt, N.Y.) both posted double-doubles as James finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Pascale scored 13 and grabbed a career-high 15 boards. The 15 rebounds by Pascale are the most by a Raider since Alex Woodhouse grabbed the same amount against Lehigh during the 2007-08 season.
Freshman guard
Pat Moore (Utica, N.Y.) and junior forward
Yaw Gyawu (Lilburn, Ga.) also reached double digits in scoring with 12 and 10 points, respectively, while senior captain
Joe Hoban (West Chester, Pa.) pitched in nine points and eight assists. Sophomore center
John Brandenburg (St. Louis, Mo.) scored seven points and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds.
Gyawu and Hoban lead Colgate in scoring averaging 11.8 and 9.3 points per game, respectively. Pascale is the leader on the boards with 6.0 rebounds per game.
SCOUTING ARMY (8-7, 0-0 PL)
The Black Knights enter Saturday's game 8-7 overall and have won three of their last four games including a 67-47 thumping of Dartmouth on Monday (Jan. 3). Army is also 5-4 on the road this season.
The Black Knights have three players that average double digits in scoring led by Julian Simmons with 16.5 points per game, which ranks third in the Patriot League. Army is also receiving 14.7 points per game from Jeremy Hence and 13.1 from Ella Ellis. Hence leads the Black Knights with 5.8 rebounds per game.
CLOSING IN ON 1,000
Junior forward
Yaw Gyawu leads Colgate in scoring this season with 12.1 points per game and is closing in on 1,000 points in his career. Gyawu currently has 876 points, 124 away from becoming the 28th player in school history to join the 1,000-point club.
THE DAVIS FILE
Head coach Emmett Davis (St. Lawrence, 1984) is in his 13th year in charge at Colgate, owning the most wins in school history with 159.
During coach Davis' decade long tenure, the Colgate program has been a model of consistency. In nine of his 12 seasons, Davis has led the Raiders to either the upper division of the Patriot League standings or advanced the team to the semifinals or finals of the conference tournament. From 2001-2004 the Raiders finished with three consecutive regular season winning records (2001-02…17-10, 2002-03…14-13, and 2003-04…14-13) and in 2007-08 the Raiders tied the school record for wins in a season with 18.
Davis reached another career milestone in November 2005, as Colgate defeated Matt Doherty's Florida Atlantic team 78-74 earning coach Davis his 100th career victory making him just the fifth coach in school history to win 100 games.
