Raiders Open League Play with Army at Home

– The Colgate women's basketball team will open Patriot League play this weekend when it hosts Army on Friday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. on Cotterell Court. The Raiders will play the rest of their regular season games against conference opponents.

The game will be televised on Time Warner Cable Sports.

Colgate (5-9, 0-0 PL) is coming off a three –game trip to Colorado over the New Year. The team suffered two overtime losses to Northern Colorado and Air Force while also falling to Colorado, ending its non-conference portion of the season with a 5-9 record.

COURT LEADERS

Sophomore Jhazmine Lynch leads the team and is second in the league in scoring with an average of 15.1 points per game. She also leads the league in steals with an average of 3.1 per game. Beside her are senior Tayler Wejnert who is second on the team with an average of 12.6 points per game and senior Krista Moser who has a team-high 7.5 rebound average.

TEAM STATS
The Raiders lead the league in scoring offense and defensive rebounds with 64.1 points and 28.4 rebounds per game. The team is also second in the league in three-point field goal percentage (.349), rebounding offense (41.1 per game) and rebounding margin, averaging 3.4 more rebounds than their opponents per game.

HOME SWEET HOME

Colgate is 4-1 on Cotterell Court this season. Having played majority of its games on the road, the team opened its first home game with an 85-58 win over NJIT on Nov. 17. Since then, the Raiders have had wins over Cornell, Loyola-Chicago and St. Francis (N.Y.) at home with their only setback coming against Canisius.

SERIES

Since the two teams first met in the 1983-84 season, Army has won 28 of the 48 contests, owning a 28-19 record in the all-time series. Colgate won the last meeting between the two teams in the 2009-10 season when it defeated the Black Knights 61-47 on Cotterell Court. The Raiders have a 12-10 record against Army at home.

SCOUTING ARMY

The Black Knights (5-8, 0-0 PL) are coming off a loss to Manhattan and a win over Bryant in the past week. The team, which was picked fourth in the Patriot League preseason poll, has wins against Medaille, St. Francis (N.Y.), Pennsylvania and Loyola, and has losses to Wagner, Fairleigh Dickinson, Seton Hall, Northeastern, Binghamton, Penn State and Quinnipiac.

Army will also be playing in its first conference game of the season against Colgate on Friday. The team is led by seniors Erin Anthony and Laura Baranek. Anthony leads the team in scoring and in rebounds, averaging 14 points and 12.1 rebounds per game, while Baranek is second on the team with 9.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

PRESEASON POLL

The Raiders were picked to finish tied at sixth with Lafayette in the Patriot League Preseason Poll that was released on Oct. 28. Last season's runner-up, American, was picked to finish first with a total of 93 points and nine first-place votes, which was two points over defending champions, Lehigh, who had 91 points and seven first-place votes. Following the Eagles and Mountain Hawks are Navy (70), Army (59), Holy Cross (42), Colgate (40), Lafayette (40) and Bucknell (31). American's Michelle Kirk was chosen as the Preseason Player of the Year.

1,000-POINT CLUB

Senior Sami Kozlowski, who has started every game in her collegiate career, is now just 50 points short of reaching the 1,000 career-point mark. Ending the 2009-10 season as the Raiders' second leading scorer, she has already accumulated 112 points this season.

Head coach Pamela Bass has made a deal with her team that is bound to have her in the best shape of her life. For every charge her team takes during a game, she will do one push-up on the court immediately after the foul is called.
