HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/29/11) – Junior center
Nick Pascale recorded his second double-double of the season and four other Raiders scored in double digits but it wasn't enough as Colgate fell to Navy 81-78 on Saturday in a double–overtime thriller at Cotterell Court.
Pascale finished with a career-high 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds, while sophomore point guard
Mitch Rolls scored 15 and dished out a game-high six assists. Junior
Sterling Melville pitched in 14 points with eight rebounds, while classmates
Mike Venezia and
Yaw Gyawu scored 13 and 12, respectively.
After trailing by as much as nine in the second half Colgate fought back to eventually tie the game 62-62 with 43 seconds remaining. The Raiders held the ball for a final shot, but a three-pointer by Rolls bounced off the back iron to force overtime. Colgate then scored the first four points of the overtime session after a pair of layups by Rolls and Pascale to build a 66-62 lead. But Navy struck back with a layup by Greg Brown to make it a two point game. Gyawu then made a pair of free throws to give Colgate a 68-64 lead. But J.J. Avila made a layup and Brennan Wyatt netted two free throws to tie the game 68-68. Colgate had a couple of opportunities down the stretch to reclaim the lead but missed a pair of layups giving Navy the final possession. But Isaiah Roberts missed a three pointer at the buzzer to send the game into a second overtime.
Navy (8-15, 3-4) opened the second overtime with a 7-0 run to build a 75-68 lead and never looked back. Colgate went on a 10-4 run to get as close as 79-78 with seven seconds left after Rolls nailed a three-pointer. After Jordan Sugars made both of his free throw attempts the Raiders still had one more chance to tie the game, but the three point attempt by Rolls found the back iron again to the Midshipmen their third straight win.
Colgate (4-17, 2-5) opened the game with a 9-0 run through the first four minutes of action. But Navy responded 28-14 run to take 28-23 lead with just under five minutes remaining. Colgate wound end the half with a 9-4 run as both teams entered their locker rooms tied 32-32. Pascale led the Raiders in the first half with 10 points.
Sugars led Navy with a game-high 22 points off 7-of-13 shooting, while Brown scored 20 points and O.J. Avworo had 13. Colgate won the battle on the boards 47-to-28, but committed 27 turnovers, including three in the second overtime session that led to seven straight points for the Mids.
Colgate will host non-conference Longwood on Wednesday, Feb. 2. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Cotterell Court and will be live on Colgate All-Access.
