WORCESTER, Mass. (1/27/11) – Senior captain
Joe Hoban scored a career-high 22 points to help lead Colgate to a 79-72 win over Holy Cross Thursday night at the Hart Center. The win marked the third straight for the Raiders over Holy Cross.
Hoban finished the game 8-for-11 from the field, while junior forward
Yaw Gyawu shot 8-for-13 for 21 points. Junior
Sterling Melville pitched in 11 points and eight rebounds, while classmate
Nick Pascale score eight and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Colgate (4-16, 2-4) got off to a great start with a 17-5 lead just under seven minutes into the game. The Raiders then carried that 12-point margin for the next five minutes before Holy Cross responded with a 15-8 run to trim the lead to 34-29 1:59 remaining. Colgate then responded with a 6-0 run before Devin Brown completed a three-point play with two seconds remaining to make the score 40-32 at halftime. Gyawu led Colgate in the first half with 10 points, while Pascale grabbed seven boards.
The Raiders began the second half with a 12-6 run over the first four minutes to build a 52-38 lead and never looked back. Colgate would extend its lead to 70-52 with 7:06 remaining, before Holy Cross went on a 9-0 run to trim the lead to 70-61 with 5:09 remaining. The Raiders answered back with a couple of layups by Pascale to lead 74-63 in the final three minutes of action. Holy Cross then scored the next seven points to get as close as 74-70 with 43 seconds remaining but a dunk by Gyawu and three made free throws sealed the Raiders second straight win at the Hart Center.
Holy Cross (4-16, 3-3) was led by Brown who scored 20 points, while Mike Cavataio pitched in 17. Jordan Stevens and Andrew Keister each scored 12 points, while Keister grabbed six rebounds.
Colgate finished the game shooting 55 percent from the field (31-56) and 42 percent from beyond the arc (5-12). The Raiders also won the battle on the boards 34-23, while dishing out 17 assists.
Colgate will host Navy on Saturday, Jan. 29 at Cotterell Court. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. and can be seen live on Time Warner Cable Sports.
