SCOUTING COLGATE (2-15, 0-3 PL)
The Raiders are coming off a 67-64 win over Dartmouth on Monday (Jan. 17) and have split the season series with the Big Green.
Colgate won at home for the first time this season behind a big day from junior center
Nick Pascale, who finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and five blocks. Colgate led 33-26 at the half, and built the advantage to 47-32 with 13:47 to play in the game. Dartmouth scored the next nine points to trim Colgate's lead to six, and continued to stay close and cut the gap all the way to 65-64 with 19 seconds left.
Mike Venezia made a pair of free throws with seven seconds left for the 67-64 lead, and the Big Green missed a three at the buzzer that would have tied the score. Venezia and
Yaw Gyawu also finished in double figures with 11 points apiece.
Gyawu and
Joe Hoban lead Colgate in scoring averaging 12.8 and 8.8 points per game, respectively. Pascale is the leader on the boards with 6.2 rebounds per game.
SCOUTING LEHIGH (10-8, 1-2 PL)
The Mountain Hawks enter Wednesday's game 1-2 in league play after falling to Army, 75-72, on Saturday (Jan. 15). Sophomore C.J. McCollum finished the game with 24 points and nine rebounds to become the second-fastest Patriot Leaguer to reach 1,000 career points. McCollum reached the mark in 51 games, just behind the 44 for Colgate's Tucker Neale (1993-94) for the fastest in League history. Classmate Gabe Knutson also finished the game in double figures with 16 points.
The Mountain Hawks made 45 percent from the field and 21-of-25 from the line, but shot 1-of-13 from three-point range.
CLOSING IN ON 1,000
Junior forward
Yaw Gyawu leads Colgate in scoring this season with 12.5 points per game and is closing in on 1,000 points in his career. Gyawu currently has 940 points, 60 away from becoming the 28th player in school history to join the 1,000 point club.
THE DAVIS FILE
Head coach Emmett Davis (St. Lawrence, 1984) is in his 13th year in charge at Colgate, owning the most wins in school history with 160.
During coach Davis' decade long tenure, the Colgate program has been a model of consistency. In nine of his 12 seasons, Davis has led the Raiders to either the upper division of the Patriot League standings or advanced the team to the semifinals or finals of the conference tournament. From 2001-2004 the Raiders finished with three consecutive regular season winning records (2001-02…17-10, 2002-03…14-13, and 2003-04…14-13) and in 2007-08 the Raiders tied the school record for wins in a season with 18.
Davis reached another career milestone in November 2005, as Colgate defeated Matt Doherty's Florida Atlantic team 78-74 earning coach Davis his 100th career victory making him just the fifth coach in school history to win 100 games.
