BUFFALO, N.Y. (9/10/10) – The Colgate women's volleyball team dropped its fourth match of the season with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-14) loss to Canisius in the opening match of the Canisius/Niagara Invitational on Friday afternoon.
The Raiders (3-4) were led by junior
Maureen Colligan (Odessa, Fla.) with eight kills and three blocks. She also had three digs in the first match of the day. Freshman
Kaylee Fifer (Lantana, Texas) added 18 assists, while senior captains
Logan Keala (Kaneohe, Hawaii) and
Devon Applegate (Davidson, N.C.) posted eight and nine digs, respectively.
The Griffins (3-7) got a total of 13 kills from Emily Elek, who only faltered two times in 30 attempts. Samantha Good, who came in as the team leader in kills, recorded 10 of her own and had one error in 14 tries. Janelle Davis finished with 23 helpers, while Allyson Severyn collected 11 digs on the day. Canisius concluded the match with a .333 hitting percentage with 42 kills and only 11 errors.
In the first set, Colgate fell behind early by a 6-2 margin and couldn't mount a comeback as the closest that the Raiders got was 11-8 after a kill from senior captain
Casey Ritt (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Canisius held the lead for the entire set and didn't allow the Raiders closer than three points to take a 1-0 set lead with a 25-20 victory.
The Raiders showed some fight in the second set with a pair of multi-point comebacks. They were able to take a 1-0 lead on an assisted block by Ritt and Colligan, but the Griffins opened up a 3-1 advantage after Colgate had three attack errors. Sophomore
Michelle McCarthy (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and junior
Kaylee Dougherty (Landsville, Pa.) got the Raiders back on track with consecutive kills to even the score at 5-5.
After a four-point run by the Griffins to open up a 9-5 lead, Colgate fought back to make it 13-13 on a kill from junior
Alexis Griffith (Cleveland, Ohio). The Raiders stayed with Canisius throughout the rest of the match, but could never take the lead and eventually the Griffins took a 2-0 set lead with a 25-21 win.
The third set was all Canisius from the start. The Griffins built a 7-2 lead and didn't let the Raiders back in the game. Canisius went on to win the set 25-14 and the match by a 3-0 score.
Colgate is back in action later tonight at 8 p.m. as the Raiders have a tough test with Indiana, who is off to its best start in 10 years at 7-0, after a 3-0 sweep of Robert Morris today. To follow all the live action, visit the new
