Women's Basketball Weekly Release #13: Raiders Host Bucknell on Pink Zone Day

The Raiders will take on defending Patriot League champs Lehigh on Wednesday, Feb. 17, before hosting the Bison for their annual Pink Zone game on Saturday, Feb. 20. Tip-off against Lehigh is scheduled for 7 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. tip-off against Bucknell on Saturday.
 
Scouting the Mountain Hawks
Last year's Patriot League Tournament champion, Lehigh, is currently tied with American for the top spot in the league standings with a 9-1 record. The Mountain Hawks are 22-3 overall this season with wins against Villanova, Duquesne and La Salle. The squad's only conference loss came at American, 69-65, in overtime on Jan. 9. Lehigh revenged that loss a few weeks ago on Feb. 6, defeating the Eagles, 53-46, at Stabler Arena. Leading the Mountain Hawks in scoring is Erica Prosser with 14.4 points per game to go with a league-high 4.24 assists and 2.7 steals. Emily Gratch adds 11.2 points per game while Alex Ross contributes 10.7 points and leads the league in three-point field goals made. At the defensive end, Tricia Smith tops the boards with 6.6 rebounds per game followed by Alexa Williams with 5.3 rebounds and .8 blocks per game. Head coach Sue Troyan is in her 15th season at the helm of the women's basketball program. Last year, Troyan won her second Patriot League title after finishing the regular season 23-6 overall and 12-2 in the league.
 
Scouting the Bison
Bucknell holds a 7-16 overall record along with a 3-7 mark in Patriot League play. The Bison are looking to snap a three game losing streak after dropping games to Navy, American and Holy Cross. Their last win came back on Jan. 30, a 59-41 win at Army. Trisha Krewson leads the squad with 12.2 points followed by Joyce Novacek with 9.2 points, and a team-high 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks. Cosima Higham averages 7.0 boards per game to go with 7.8 points while Morgan Wrightson adds 8.7 points per game. Rachel Voss has a team-high 2.3 assists while freshman Lindsay Horbatuck leads the squad in steals averaging 1.4 a game. Kathy Fedorjaka is in her 13th season as head coach of the Bucknell women's basketball program, leading the Bison to a regular season record of 16-11 overall during the 2009 season.
 
Last Time Out
The Raiders are currently in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Patriot League standings with a 4-6 record alongside Army and Holy Cross. The Raiders split their two games last week outlasting Lafayette in overtime, 60-57, before having their three-game win streak snapped by American on Feb. 13. The Raiders fell to the Eagles, 82-47, as junior Krista Moser (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) recorded her second double-double of the season scoring a team-high 15 points to go with a game-high 10 rebounds. Senior Katie Garman (Poplar Grove, Ill.) led the Raiders in their win against the Leopards tallying 15 points and eight rebounds to go with three assists while Tricia Oakes (Evergreen, Colo.) added 13 points and eight boards.
 
 
Series vs. Lehigh/Bucknell
 
Lehigh – The Mountain Hawks lead the all-time series against Colgate 27-21 and have won the last nine meetings against the Raiders. Lehigh won its last game against the Raiders, squeaking past Colgate in the final five minutes of play for a 57-45 win. Freshman Jhazmine Lynch (San Diego, Calif.) led the Raiders in scoring with 11 points and eight rebounds while Lehigh's Courtny Dentler led all scorers with 12 points. The Mountain Hawks had two other players score in double-digits while Tricia Smith picked up a game-high nine boards.
 
Bucknell – The Bison hold an 34-18 lead in its series against the Raiders and have won the last five meetings. Bucknell defeated the Raiders at their home court, Sojka Pavilion, earlier this season, 60-47. Junior Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) led the Raiders with 13 points while Krista Moser gathered a team-high seven boards. Bucknell's Rachel Voss led all scorers with 20 points and added nine rebounds, while Cosima Higham picked up a game-high 13 boards in the Bison win.
 
Leading the Way
Sophomore Tricia Oakes is currently leading the Raiders in scoring with an average of 10.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, while junior Sami Kozlowski is averaging 9.5 points and 2.1 assists per game. Rookie Jhazmine Lynch is third in scoring and leads the freshmen class with 9.0 points and 1.5 steals per game. Junior Krista Moser follows Oakes in rebounding averaging 5.0 per game to go with 4.9 points, while sophomore Candice Green (East Brunswick, N.J.) contributes 6.0 points and dishes out a team-high 2.2 assists per game.
 
Weekly Honors
Colgate women's basketball freshman Jhazmine Lynch was named the Patriot League/Anaconda Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sunday, Feb. 7. This marks the third time this season that the Raiders point guard has received the weekly honor. Lynch led Colgate to a 61-47 victory against Army on Saturday, Feb. 6, their first victory against the Black Knights since 2006. She scored a team-high 15 points and pulled down six rebounds while shooting 5-12 from the floor and 5-7 from the free throw line. Lynch is third on the team in scoring averaging 9.4 points along 1.9 assists and a team high 1.6 steals per game.
 
Top Returners
The Raiders return 10 players to this year's squad, including four starters from the 2008-09 season. Junior Tayler Wejnert (Ramsey, N.J.) returns to the Colgate squad after appearing in 20 games last season. Wejnert led the team in scoring averaging 11.7 points per game, followed by fellow junior Sami Kozlowski who averaged 9.7 points and led the team in steals with 33 in 30 starts with the Raiders. Tricia Oakes led Colgate on the boards as a freshman, pulling down 6.0 rebounds in 22 games. Sophomore Candice Green also started in all 30 games for the Raiders last season averaging 6.5 points and 2.5 rebounds.
 
Preseason Picks
The Colgate women's basketball team was picked to finish seventh in the 2010 Patriot League preseason coaches and sports information directors poll. Defending champion Lehigh was selected to repeat this year, with 97 total points and 13-first place votes.  Following the Mountain Hawks in order are American (76, 3 first-place), Holy Cross (76), Navy (54), Bucknell (52), Army (50), Colgate (22) and Lafayette (21). Lehigh's Erica Prosser was chosen as the Preseason Player of the Year. 
 
Rookie Trio
Colgate welcomed three freshmen to this year's squad, center Lulu Brase of Lake Wylie, S.C., guard Jhazmine Lynch of San Diego, Calif., and guard Rebekah Ward of Montreal, Que.   
 
Up Next
The Raiders will wrap up their regular season slate next week when they host Holy Cross before traveling to Annapolis, Md. to take on Navy. Colgate will play the Crusaders on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 27, the Raiders will face Navy at 7 p.m. before looking ahead toward the Patriot League Tournament.
