Yaw Gyawu (Lilburn, Ga.) scored 14 points apiece, but it wasn't enough as the Colgate men's basketball team fell to St. Francis (N.Y.) 68-57, Tuesday night at the Pope Physical Education Center.
Colgate (0-7) held a 30-27 lead at halftime, but a 15-1 run by the Terriers in the second half helped secure their fourth-straight win at home this season. Akeem Bennett who finished with a game-high 19 points, scored 12 in the second half to lead St. Francis.
Hoban finished with 14 points, five assists and two steals, while Gyawu scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Freshman
Chad Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) kept Colgate in the game with a career-high 12 points, 10 of which came in the second half.
St. Francis (4-3) opened the game with an 8-2 lead through the first 3:40 of the game, but Colgate was able to answer back with a 15-2 run to build a 17-10 lead with 8:36 remaining. After a pair of free throws from Akeem Johnson trimmed the lead to 17-12, a three pointer from Hoban gave the Raiders their largest lead of the game 20-12. Hoban led all players with 12 points in the first half, while Gyawu pitched in eight.
Both teams exchanged baskets to begin the second half including a dunk by sophomore center
John Brandenburg (St. Louis, Mo.) to give Colgate an early 32-27 lead. The Terriers would score five straight points to tie the game 32-32, before Gyawu split a pair of free throws to give the lead back to the Raiders 33-32. St. Francis would score back-to-back baskets to take a three-point lead 36-33, but Colgate would respond with a pair of layups from Gyawu and Johnson to take its last lead of the game 37-36, with 13:25 remaining.
Colgate won the battle on the boards 35-34 and outscored the Terriers 36-26 in the paint, but St. Francis was able to score 22 points off 25 Colgate turnovers.
Colgate will stay on the road this week as it travels to the Carrier Dome on Saturday, Dec. 11 to face No. 7 ranked Syracuse. The game is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be aired live on the Big East Network.
