HAMILTON, N.Y. (12/4/10) – The Colgate men's basketball team's second half rally came up short Saturday as the Raiders fell to New Hampshire 65-60 at Cotterell Court.
New Hampshire (5-2) led by as much as 18 in the second half, but saw its lead trimmed to four after a 32-18 run by the Raiders to make the score 62-58 with 23 seconds remaining. The Wildcats made three straight free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win.
Colgate (0-6) was led by senior captain
Joe Hoban who finished with a career-high 16 points, including 13 in the second half, off 4-of-8 shooting including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Junior center
Nick Pascale also pitched in a career day with 12 points and nine rebounds for the Raiders, while classmate
Yaw Gyawu finished with 14 points.
The Wildcats were led by Dane DiLiegro who finished with a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds, as New Hampshire never trailed in the game. Brian Benson led the team in the first half with nine points and eight rebounds to give the Wildcats a 33-21 lead at the half.
After a three-point basket from Tyrone Conley gave New Hampshire a 44-26 lead early in the second half, the Raiders slowly began to climb back. Gyawu and Pascale started the run with back-to-back three point plays to make the score 46-34 with 13:20 remaining. Hoban then followed with seven of the Raiders next 11 points to trim the lead to 51-45, with 8:20 left on the clock. Both teams would swap points from here on out as Colgate got as close as four on two occasions, including with 23 seconds remaining after a Pascale layup.
The free throw line seemed to be the story of the game as New Hampshire finished 23-of-29 from the charity stripe, while Colgate ended the game 12-of-21. The Raiders controlled much of the second half off good shooting and strong rebounding. Colgate shot 48 percent from the field in the second half, including 5-of-8 from three-point range, while holding the Wildcats to 32 percent from the field. The Raiders also out rebounded New Hampshire 19-16 in the second half and finished tied for the game on the glass 33-33.
Colgate looks to grab it first win of the season on Tuesday, Dec. 7 when it travels to St. Francis (N.Y.). The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Pope Physical Education Center.
