Pat Moore (Utica, N.Y.) combine for 26 points but it wasn't enough as Colgate fell to Stony Brook 63-54 Wednesday night at Pritchard Gymnasium.
Gyawu and Moore led the Raiders with 13 points apiece, while junior center
Nick Pascale (DeWitt, N.Y.) scored nine and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds.
Colgate (0-11) had an opportunity in the second half to grab its first win of the season after Gyawu made back-to-back layups to trim the Seawolves lead to 51-49 with 5:06 remaining. But a 12-5 run by Stony Brook over the final five minutes gave the Raiders their eighth straight loss on the road this season.
Colgate was able to grab the lead on four different occasions in the first half including its largest lead of the game at the 11:41 mark 18-14. After the Raiders built a three point lead 24-21 with 5:26 remaining Stony Brook responded with a 7-3 run to take a 28-27 lead into the locker room. Moore led the Raiders in the first half with eight points, while Pascale pitched in four points, four rebounds and one blocked shot to keep Colgate within striking range.
Stony Brook (5-6) built a seven point lead 40-33 with 13:20 left in regulation, after the Raiders opened the half with a 6-4 run to take a 33-32 lead. The Seawolves maintained a seven point lead for most of the second half until Moore and Gyawu sparked a late 7-2 run to trim the lead to 51-49.
Bryan Dougher led the Stony Brook with a game-high 15 points, while Anthony Mayo pitched in 10. Colgate won the battle on the boards 40-34 and out scored the Seawolves 26-22 in the paint, but committed 16 turnovers leading to 17 points for Stony Brook.
Colgate will travel to Longwood on Sunday, Jan. 2. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Willet Hall.
