WEST POINT, N.Y. (11/05/10) – The Colgate women's soccer team saw its 2010 season come to a close on Friday evening when it fell to Army 1-0 in overtime, in the first semifinal game of the Patriot League Tournament in West Point, N.Y.
Ashley Walsh (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) had four saves.
The first half started off fairly even with both teams fighting for ball possession in the midfield. However, as the half progressed, it was Army that controlled the tempo, taking several shots on net but with no success. Colgate continued to play solid defense, keeping the game scoreless at the end of first half.
In the second half it was Colgate that came out playing more offensively, creating one opportunity after another to keep the Black Knights playing constant defense. As the half wound down, both teams continued to search for a last-minute goal but neither one could find the back of the net, sending the game into overtime.
The overtime period started with the same intensity as the final minutes of regular time. The Raiders continued to attack Army's net aggressively, but it was the Black Knights that found the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute from an incredible strike by Carlie Turnnidge into the top-right corner, just out of Walsh's reach, to propel her team into the championship game on Sunday.
“I thought we played an outstanding second half tonight,” stated head coach
Kathy Brawn. “We defended and attacked as a team and stayed focused in spite of some very physical challenges by the Black Knights. Army's goal in overtime was picture perfect and there was nothing Ashley could have done. I am proud of this team, especially the seniors, and truly wish the season could continue.”
The Raiders outshot Army 8-3 in the second half with Walsh only making one save.
The women's soccer team completes the 2010 season with an overall record of 6-12-1. Sophomore forward
Jillian Kinter (Newburyport, Mass.) and junior
midfield/forward
Alyssa Manoogian (Peabody, Mass.) finish the season as the point leaders, with Kinter leading the team in goals (6) and Manoogian leading the team in assists (5).
