Gyawu, Raiders Fall to Columbia 76-63

– Colgate junior forward Yaw Gyawu (Lilburn, Ga.) recorded a team-high 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals, but it wasn't enough as the Raiders fell to Columbia 76-63, Monday night at Levien Gymnasium.

Colgate (0-4) took a 43-41 lead with 13:36 remaining in the second half after junior Nick Pascale (Dewitt, N.Y.) converted the traditional three-point play through a dunk and a free throw, but a 28-10 run by the Lions over the next 10 minutes proved to be too much to overcome. Handing the Raiders their fourth straight loss to start the season.

Sophomore guard Mitch Rolls (Coffeyville, Kan.) scored a season-high 14 points, while Pascale recorded a career-high 12 points to go along with a season-high six rebounds in the loss.

Columbia (2-3) opened the game with a 15-6 run through the first 5:04 of the game, but the Raiders were able to respond with a 13-7 run of their own to trim the lead to 22-19 with 7:02 remaining. Columbia was able to build its lead up to 27-19, but a late run by Colgate trimmed the lead to 31-30 at halftime. Gyawu and Rolls led the Raiders attack in the first half combining for 20 of Colgate's 30 points. Gyawu shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the field to score 11 points, while Rolls pitched in nine.

Both teams exchanged baskets to begin the second half before the Raiders took their only lead of the game 43-41 off Pascale's three-point play. Both Pascale and junior Mike Venezia (Westfield, N.J.) scored eight in the second half to lead the Raiders.

Columbia's Noruwa Agho led all scorers with 25 points, while Brian Barbour and Aseno Ampim both scored 16.

Colgate will stay on the road this week when it travels to Hanover, N.H. on Saturday, Nov. 27 to face Dartmouth. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Leede Arena.
