Box Score

LORETTO, Pa. (11/15/10)
– Juniors Mike Venezia (Westfield, N.J.) and Yaw Gyawu (Lilburn, Ga.) combined for 37 points, but it wasn't enough as the Colgate men's basketball team fell to St. Francis (Pa.) 69-66, Monday night at DelGol Arena.

Venezia scored a team-high 19 points, off 6-14 shooting, 4-8 from beyond the arc, while Gyawu added 18 points and five rebounds to help the Raiders build a 65-58 lead with 2:35 remaining, but a late 11-1 run by the Red Flash sealed the win.

Colgate (0-2) opened the game with a 13-8 lead through the first 6:10 of the game, as guards Venezia and freshman Chad Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) combined for nine points during that stretch. St. Francis (1-1) responded with a 14-3 run over the next four minutes to build a 22-16 lead, but Colgate was able to answer back to eventually take a 34-33 lead after Gyawu made a lay-up with 23 seconds remaining. St. Francis guard Umar Shannon, who scored a game-high 23 points, made a jumper as the horn sounded to give the Red Flash a 35-34 halftime lead.

Both teams exchanged baskets to begin the second half before the Raiders built the largest lead of the game 55-46 off an 11-2 run with 8:14 remaining. Colgate would hold the lead until Shannon made a three pointer with 1:23 remaining to give the Red Flash the lead for good 67-66. It was the first lead St. Francis had since being up 41-40 in the opening minutes of the half.

Colgate will stay on the road this week when it travels to Durham, N.C. on Friday, Nov. 19 to face defending national champion Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The game is slated to begin at 8:30 p.m. and will be aired live on ESPN3.
