Swimming and Diving Squads Travel to Bucknell

HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/12/10) – The Colgate swimming and diving squads will be on the road for the first time this weekend as the Raiders travel to Bucknell for a Saturday afternoon meet, beginning at 1 p.m.

WOMEN DOMINATE BOSTON COLLEGE

The Colgate women came through with its first win of the season, crushing Boston College by taking every event except one during the meet last Saturday. The Raiders got three individual wins from senior Caren Guyett (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and senior captain Erin McGraw (Penfield, N.Y.), while sophomore Lia Kunnapas (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) and sophomore Emma Santoro (Fall River, Mass.) contributed two wins apiece. Sophomore Kim Pilka (Great Falls, Va.) continued to dive well early on in the season, sweeping both events.

PILKA CONTINUES TO IMPRESS AT LINEBERRY

This season Pilka has won all but one diving event in three meets at Lineberry Natatorium. She has won two Patriot League Female Diver of the Week awards after sweeping the diving events against Buffalo and Boston College in the first two meets of the year. She dropped her first last Sunday against Boston University. Pilka won the 1-meter dive by 16 points, but Melinda Matyas took the 3-meter competition to keep Pilka from winning all diving events this year at home.

SETTING THREE POOL RECORDS
The women also saw three of its pool records fall last Saturday against Boston University. The 400-yard medley relay team of Kunnapas, Santoro, rookie Claire Hunter (Rye, N.Y.) and McGraw set a pool record with a time of 3:54.30. The team beat out last year's mark of 3:54.46. Kunnapas continued to swim well with a record-breaking swim in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:04.19. She broke her own record from last year at 2:04.36. Guyett was another swimmer with a new pool record and she also eclipsed her own best mark from last season in the 500-yard freestyle. Guyett almost shaved a full second off of her previous pool record with a time of 5:00.07. Last year's mark was 5:00.87.

The Terriers broke three pool records of their own. They set the new mark in the 200-yard free relay with a time of 1:36.34. Meaghan Grimes came through with a time of 10:17.47 in the 1000-free for a new record, while Amanda Schmitz erased a record in the 200-yard fly with a time of 12:03.

UPPERCLASSMEN LEADING THE WAY
For the men, senior captain Tucker Gniewek (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and junior Costas Hadjipateras (New Canaan, Conn.) have been the most impressive swimmers. Hadjipateras won three events over the weekend by taking home a win in the 200-yard butterfly against Boston University at 1:56.71. Against BC, he began with a win in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:56.4 and he swept both fly events with a win in the 100-yard later on in the meet at 52.95 seconds. Gniewek won his first event against the Eagles with a time of 21.69 in the 50-yard freestyle. He made it two event wins with a victory in the 100-yard freestyle, reaching out at 48.16 seconds. He won his third event of the weekend in the 100-yard freestyle. He finished with a time of 47.75 seconds.

SCOUTING THE BISON
The Bucknell men are coming off two wins in a Patriot League quad-meet last weekend featuring American, Lafayette and Navy. The Bison dismantled the Eagles and Leopards, posting over 200 points, while the Midshipmen swept the entire meet with a 186-111 win over Bucknell. The men have a combined 4-1 mark this season and the women enter the meet with the exact record as the men. The women defeated American (224-66) and Lafayette (225-75) last weekend, but they also lost to defending Patriot League champion Navy (154-144).
