LEWISBURG, PA. (10/30/10) - The Colgate women's soccer team completed its regular season with a 1-0 setback to Patriot League opponent, Bucknell on Saturday evening. Despite outshooting the Bison 12-9, the team could not find the goal they desperately needed to keep them in the game.
Bucknell got on the scoreboard early in the first half when Christa Matlack found the back of the net in the 12th minute to give the Bison the lead. Both teams continued to battle it out throughout the half but neither one was able to score, ending the half at 1-0.
The second half was similar to the first, with both teams aggressively looking for a goal, but it was Matlack's early goal that proved to be decider, giving Bucknell the win it needed to tie with Army as the 2010 Patriot League regular-season co-champion.
“Bucknell took great advantage of an early opportunity,” stated head coach
Kathy Brawn. “Beyond that, I thought we played a solid game, particularly in the second half. Our players have done an amazing job turning the season around and earning a spot in the Patriot League tournament.
Colgate went into this game having already clinched a tournament berth after Navy lost to American 3-2 on Friday night. With a conference record of 3-3-1, the Raiders will enter next week's tournament as the fourth seed.
The defending champions will have one week to rest as they prepare for the tournament that will begin next weekend in West Point, N.Y. The team will play No. 1 seed and host, Army, on Friday, Nov. 5 in one of the two semi-final games.
